Hi all, It's on a Massport Presient 4000. Nice mower base, big wheels. Anyway it was going , then it stopped...... funny...... No spark, I think it is dead. I have a maybe Techumseh coil that may fi, will try tomorrow. But I was wondering if a B&S previous series, like 450 , I have a few coils but holes don't match up with flywheel. Question is can I use older coil and flywheel on a series 650.... ? speedy

Sorry Speedy, can't help, haven't tried that combo. I assume this is a Quantam motor, so the other Briggs coils won't fit. Not sure but you might be able to file/slot the holes in the other Briggs coils about 1mm towards the flywheel side and it might fit, as I said I haven't tried. I have also not tried to swap to the other flywheel, this would probably allow you to fit the other coil. If you want me to I can try one tomorrow just for kicks and giggles as I do have one here that is a vertical pull Quantam that the pull starter is broken so I have to fit another cup starter to it so I can spend a bit of time on it to see where that takes me.
Speedy if you can give the engine model and type number I can link to a site that would a list of the other models that use the same coil. I need first to know which your is needing to do so.
Hello gents, the coil/flywheel from the 11ci vertical pull quantum wont work, it's the same size as a 9ci motor(450 series, classic 35, sprint 375 etc.) You will need a coil from a 12ci quantum, I've got heaps of them here, but postage may hurt a little getting it to you. The tecumseh coil i've never tried but probably wont fit either Cheers, Ted
Hi BT, what did they do with the 12ci Quantams, did they make the flywheel a couple of mm bigger in diameter? Speedy, another thing to check is that the fault is not in the plugcap, make sure the lead is not broken inside the cap, been caught with a few like that.
Yes Norm , that's a good idea, check the simple things first. The flywheel is an extra 20 mm in diameter that older 450 series...... so coil and older flywheel don't match up with support holes. Hi AVB, the model is 12J902-0113-01 07080958. Thanks
The drilled out coil from a earlier model didn't work, neither did the Techumseh which I drilled to fit..... The coil on it has no 07 21 on it. and 4 mounting holes so it was able to be used on oher machines. Just didn't want to buy a new part for a machine I haven't seen going................. I'll check the prices. thanks Speedy

As BigTed said it going to primarily from the 120000 series. So you options are limited on this one. It is to do with mounting post spread and the flywheel OD.
That particular coil is no longer available thru Briggs as they superseded it to a newer design so they can use the thermal choke. New PN 590454. Good news here as there is already aftermarket version on the market. It is smaller design and I attached inline an image of it. I don't know if it is available in your area but search the above part number. Here my cost on the after market is less than 20 usd but I do know things are higher over there. Your cost depends how well Chinese doing on cloning it. Our government just slap a 20% tariff on things like this so my cost is going up too. Even locally made stuff is going considerably due raw materials cost.
I also add that the HV lead is replaceable if you are careful as they are just screwed in and cemented in place. I do this on several coil every year where mice have chewed the lead in two. Of course I have a very keen knife to do this. Just below the HV lead is the electronics on a surface mount circuit board. You can not test the electronic trigger due the design of the circuit itself.
Speedy have you come up with a solution yet?I probably have one here I have a number of Quantams sitting around here, but as BT said postage could be $8/10
The guy gurneyed it, then it started and then it didn't. Water buggers coils, I did it on my ford.... But I'll PM you and get one and try from there. thanks speedy

Here is one for you Speedy if you get stuck, not sure if this bloke sells much because his prices are always top end, but he keeps advertising so somebody must buy bits from him. He often has things like as new Victa base for $250 or something like that. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/IGNITIO...M-190cc-MOTOR-MOWER-ENGINE/323331711471?
Looks good Speedy, always a good feeling to get another one running, it is why I get out of bed every day, the challenge of getting another one to fire up and hopefully not smoke. That is always a let down because then it is just a case of pull the motor off and put it in the scrap/spares pile
