I need to get/make up a spark plug socket for a generator that my grandson has, I tried once before to get it out but it is very difficult to get to it. My problem is I'm not sure of the size because it is hidden so far inside this stupid machine. These thing seem to be built to look nice but are not the greatest bit of kit. I guess you get what you pay for, lots of bells and whistles but not too reliable. I'm wondering if anybody would have an idea of the plug size so I can try and make something up, otherwise I have to remove all the casing so that I can get to the plug, I think I might have to do that anyway because I think it might have a carby problem and the only way to get even near that is to dismantle the whole thing

Try a tube socket instead of a spark plug one, then to remove just push a bit of car fuel hose over the end of the plug.

That is what I was thinking Paul but I will need to cut it down and maybe weld something to the end like a 10mm nut or something so I can get in there to turn it. It is one of these things where they have a motor and then fit a petrol tank above and directly in line with the plug. The manufacturer never has to change a spark plug, they just bolt it all together. Alternative is as I said split the casing so then it is easy to get to because the petrol tank can then be removed.

Thanks Max, I'm going to have to split the cases to get to the carby so I can get the plug out then. Not the best design

Just as an update, I ended up getting the spark plug out, one of those stupid 8.9mm thread I think it is. Chinese rubbish plug, ended up getting an NGK put it in and all is good. Just have to wait and see how log this unit lasts as it has only done about 6 hours from new

The smallest plug I have seen is the 10mm and they tend to fail a lot.

I wouldn't have believed they would have made a mongrel size plug till my grandson looked them up and they were listed as either 8.8mm or 8.9 mm, I cant remember but at the time I put my vernier on it and that was what it measured. If I have any more trouble with this thing I will be tapping the head out to a standard size spark plug thread.

AVB you are right again, my bad, they were listing the plugs at 9.8mm not 10mm for some reason, I was a bit rattled at the time, such a stupid design.
