Hi Guys,

I found this forum the other day & have been trawling through it & its got alot of good info on here so hoping someone can help with my project!

I recently acquired a Scott Bonnar Model 40 for really cheap & when i got it home & started stripping it down I was surprised at how nice it was inside. Im the 2nd owner - Lady bought it for her Husband in 1961.

It has the original Villiars 75cc ? on it.

Here are a couple of pics of her...

Im having issues getting the reel sprocket off at the front - It looks threaded, pretty sure its reverse thread or the chain would unscrew it off. Has a hole that would fit a screwdriver through. So i soaked it in yeild to loosen it up, jammed some wood through the reel & put a scredriver through the hole on the sprocket but it wouldn't budge. Heres a couple of pics.

Has anyone pulled one off before ? Is there a better way to hold the reel still while trying to get it off ?

I've pulled the motor out & have started cleaning it up - Grimey on the outside & not too bad inside the head - a bit of carbon build up.

Could anyone point me to some more info on the motor ? I dont know alot about motors but it looks like it has points, and an old transformer or capacitor/condensor at the bottom ? Would anyone know where i could locate a manual or parts that would fit ? Im pretty sure these parts still work but i didnt want to test it until i've cleaned it all up & removed all the carbon.

Thanks

Hello Dave
A warm welcome from me to these forums.
The Model 40 is a great machine.

Yes, sprocket will be a LH thread.
Generally, these may be quickly released with little effort.
A piece of softwood through the centre of the reel that jams the reel to the
bedknife is all that is needed. A tommy bar through the sprocket,
and a hammer tap should release the sprocket quickly.

History Record is here:

Engine Manual is here:-

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jack. I finally got it undone!!

Is there a better way apart from sandblasting to stripping these old parts? Iļæ½m using that wheel on a drill.

Thanks mate. Did you mean flap disc for a bench grinder or angle grinder? I have both so just gotta get the discs. I was actually looking at a flap disc today at Bunnings for the angle grinder but I got the drill one instead.

Must admit I've never thought of an elephant as good looking. I wouldn't want to call my wife an elephant that's for sure and there's no resemblance either.
