Hello ODK History Lovers
John Boundy - maker of Boundy Lawn Patrol, Lawn Scout, and Lawn Cub lawnmowers -
made a significant contribution to Australian rotary lawnmower manufacture in the 1950s.

He certainly never followed the 'Victa mould' of lawnmower making. Boundy
mowers had skirted alloy bases from the beginning ... 1954. They never followed
the 'toe-cutter' styled bases of Victa and other makes.

Australian companies that made engines designed for lawnmower use are few and
far between. Merv Richardson introduced his Victa engine in late 1955. It is little
understood, though, that John Boundy introduced his engine at about the same time!

This article discusses John Boundy's unique magneto for his engine.

The Boundy engine was a conventional 2-cycle loop-scavenge design; but it had
a most unconventional ignition system that incorporated otherwise flywheel magnets
into the crankshaft and crankcase, with points and condensor mounted for easy
accessibility on the front of the crankcase on later engines.

PART TWO - The Patent
John Boundy's magneto patent was lodged in November of 1955.
The patent is a fascinating read, especially when one considers the said
advantages over existing flywheel magneto types of the day. I wonder
whether there were any real advantages in the claims?
