I've stripped the reel out of my SB 14" and I'm wondering about the bearings in the reel, from left to right I had Open / Shielded then Sealed / Shielded on the drive end, I can't follow the logic, and would like to replace with sealed bearings, any comment?. When I took the side cover off all sprockets are in good condition with some looking like they were replaced yesterday, as the bright steel has no rust and the welds look like were just laid down. Currently getting the reel and bed knife sharpened, hope to put back together over the weekend and give it a test run. Does anyone have the contact number for the guys in Brisbane who are fabrication catchers for SBs????

Hi Cockie,
You should've replaced the bearings before it went off for grinding. Whoever is doing the job should've told you that when you dropped it off.
Too late now.
BTW your bearing have already at some stage been mucked around with as the originals were open ones with oiler points in the bearing caps. The later ones had sealed units installed with no oiler points in the top cap castings.
The chap you're thinking of is Dennis who makes them and his son in law that's selling them. If I recall correctly his name is Jason, but I don't have his contact number anymore as shipping catchers from Brisbane to Adelaide is far too pricey.
Cheers, BB.

Thanks BB, yes the caps do have oiler points in them, but I think I will still go ahead with sealed bearings all round.

Thanks BB, yes the caps do have oiler points in them, but I think I will still go ahead with sealed bearings all round. Sealed bearings are the only way to go, but you still have to use the domed shielding washers on the reel shaft prior to slipping shielded bearings on. The oiler points are basically redundant and as previously mentioned, they were removed from the castings in the late 1970's. Cheers, BB.

Yes they can be bought new from the following listing.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Scott-bonnar-and-rover-45-shield-washers-for-reel-cylinder/131845301233?hash=item1eb297a3f1:g:a9IAAOSw7NNT8GOv
I guess you had the age old problem of pulling one bearing off the shaft and thus cut through the bearings inner race and also the shield as well with a 4 inch angle grinder and a cutting blade ?
Cheers, BB.
