I was at my local Tip Shop and spotted a Deckson Walk Behind rotary (not self propelled) mower. It is fitted with a 5hp B&S motor I guess it is 20" cut the bottom crank bearing is shot as there is a fair bit of play in the plate. They have a price of $100.00 on it because they claim it is rare. I have searched with no result and did not take a photo of it. Dose anybody know anything about this mower I assume that it is American but is it collectable.

If it don't go its not good.

Hello exfarmer
John Deck and Sons of Smithfield, NSW, made lawnmowers from about the 1960s.
Their most known product was probably their minibikes.

I think the one you refer to is this one ...

Cheers
Jack

$100 is probably a bit steep. Does it run?, wheels good? Blades there?, check for spark. Briggs engines are usually bullet proof and well documented on the net.

What I can't believe is the tip shop thinking they are sudden experts in what mowers are rare and collectable. Seems like they have become exploitative.
I like the mower's no nonsense handlebars.
As for B&S engines being bullet proof, I call BS on that.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

One example on youtube is hardly worth noting. Probably zero oil, poorly maintained etc. They were/ are a good motor, but nonetheless not worth spending $100 on.

Thanks All
Yes Jack that is the one, they say it runs but with a bad rattle from the bottom crank bearing, all the wheels are there along with a new spare, blades need replacing, Might go out there again on Thursday when they are open again and try to negotiate a better price. Don't want it to end up like in the Video!!

I feel MF makes a great point there.
Too many times I see folk equate rare, collectable and ... valuable

In the scheme of things, Deckson played a small but important role, and more needs to be
researched and said about them. They also made ride-ons ...

I agree will Millzy about price.
I agree with MF about 'bullet-proof' engines. It also proves that some Americans are crazy*.

Cheers
