Hi Everyone, this is my first post. I had a problem with my SB45 clutch coming loose. When I stripped it down I found some dodgy looking repairs. Looks like a previous owner has slid a 3/4 tube over the 5/8" shaft then drilled in a couple of locating holes. My thoughts are to remove the sleeve and buy a new 5/8" clutch, my worry is the sleeve may have been put on because the shaft had been damaged. Any suggestions?
Unit is a 14" with a Briggs and Stratton engine (912), model 45 - 30645. Incidentally my mower was from WA and had the balance half ring on the clutch .

Hi Qualcast,

Can you remove the tube that is on the shaft so that we can see what damage has been done to the shaft before we move on. If the shaft is not to damaged you might get away with just the engine side of the clutch housing. cheers2

Hi there, Please see attached pics. There is 2 holes drilled in the shaft to act as indents for the grub screws plus one hole that was started but not used, probably too far from engine. I've measured in 4 places down the shaft , with the key way at the 12 O clock position , measuring across the 10 and 4 O clock positions and the 2 and 8 O clock positions I get between 0.617 - 0.620 " . Going from the key way to 6 O clock position 0.599". Keyway is 0.180". Looks like about 1.5 - 2mm of cork on clutch.
Assuming the shaft is within tolerance would those holes interfere with the new grub screws?

Qualcast,

This is the 5/8 engine side of the housing CLICK HERE. You should get away with it without any issues and be back to standard. cheers2

Hi Qualcast,

Bruce has pretty much covered it all and has said exactly what I would've done myself.

One point that really interests me though is that is how a Scotty has found its way to the Philippines ?

Cheers,
BB.

Hi BB,

Moved up here a few years back, We've just got our own house with 400m2 of lawn so I got the SB out of storage and started using it.
Only had about 80m2 in Aus so the 14" was perfect, now I wish I'd bought a bigger one!

Hi QC,

Yes a 17 or better still a 20 inch machine would do you well. I have a few spares laying around but it would be not cost effective to ship one that's for sure.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi Guys,

Just to follow up and report the mower is back in action. Just like to thank the guys at OutdoorKing for the great service plus a few friends who helped courier the goods for me.
I have a few extra spares now so hopefully I can keep it running for a few more years!

cheers

Ian
