In fact, you can.
Why not try "Rate this Topic" from the top menu?
It's a bit more sophisticated than a 'like' button.

It rates this topic and is recorded for all members.
I logged in as a member profile and it worked for me.
This is a five-star topic!
Check-out the particular forum to see this.
That rating will not show up in 'Active Topics' (for good reason) -
but it will display in the particular forum.
The best way to show appreciation is a reasoned reply within the topic.
