For those who are interested a genuine Vortex is going to finish in 4 hours on Fleabay. It's currently up to $50 and it has the correct catcher.

And I had the high bid on it for a week, I'm out now, pity it is just up the road

Hi Norm,

All the more reason to buy it as you won't have to pay any freight which other bidders will have to take into account. That normally keeps the value lower than its true value.

Not many complete ones of these around. I must admit I sold mine for $200 a while back so at $80 it's still a good price.

Cheers,
BB.

shocked The red one with the CSIRO disc. It would be nice of there weren't any pesky bidders inflating the price.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

I'll have to say that the bidding looks very suspicious and I suspect the seller is running it up with another ID. There is so much of this going on now on eBay it's just not funny.
eBay made it slightly less transparent a few years ago but I think it's time to revert back and expose this practice, but then again why would eBay want to as the get a higher Final Value Fee.

BTW I think the front has had it's lower lip broken off as you can't see it across the whole width of the mower and the seller has specifically taken the shots so as not to expose that section. There is a Yellow one up at the moment and it has it's frontal lip.

Cheers,
BB.

Definitely the owner bid it up using another ID. If you click the number of bids you can see the bid history and see that there were dummy bids happening. In the end though it looks like some real buyers jumped in as well.

Egged on by the dummy bids, thinking it was popular and worth getting.

Honestly I don't think so. You can see that one serious bidder jumped on but retracted his bid after the bogus bidder kept running him up.

In the end I'd say we'll see this one come up again as the owner wore it.

BB.

I love it when that happens, makes me smile, I don't win much on ebay and if I do win I get worried that there must be something about it that I have missed or I have bid on a pile of rubbish.

I no longer bid on anything on eBay after striking too many instances of the seller acting as dummy bidders. If they don't have a buy it now price that suits me I'm not interested. I have reported some to eBay but I don't know if they ever actually do anything about it.

Maybe the police as that is fraud. Good luck proving it.

Ebay don't care, why would/should they. I recently won a Victa 24 for $200 took a chance, ended up a good slasher and with minimal effort it went back to work, got lucky that time because they don't come up that often and usually the sellers want about $300

Yer, it's nearly always a bit 'pig in a poke', buying off the Bay of Fleas.

Saw a Super 24 in the local tip shop today, with $20 on it - but it had a Briggs Quantum mounted on it, and was consequently missing the big fuel tank. frown

Hi Gadge, which tip shop, I will drive up there tomorrow morning if it is still there. I have a mountain of Powertorques sitting here trying to find bodies for them and a fuel tank is no issue, soon make one of those

Thanks Trev, I still have a few chassis here, just haven't had time to clean and paint them over the last couple of months, but my pile of motors is probably about 4 motors to each base, because most bases are rusted out

Plenty of 2 strokes to convert tired 4 strokes with in future.

Isn't that simple Mowerfreak, plenty of good Rover/Masport/MTD/Talon etc bases with good wheels, (never get a chance for them to wear out before the Briggs spit the dummy) but because the Victa 2 strokes run east/west the height adjuster bar on the left hand side fouls on the Victa head. Very hard to find good Victa wheels on the 2 strokes, but I always find good wheels on Victas that were fitted with 4 stroke motors

Hi Gadge, I've just got home from picking up the Victa 24 you spotted (thanks for that) but do you have any idea where all the smoke is coming from all the way up the Valley. From Pakenham it was smokey all the way to Morwell and obviously beyond. They have shut down Hazelwood but the valley is still full of smoke. On the way back on this side of Pakenham the blue smoke turned to brown smog, so obviously not much wind to blow it away but there is a huge amount of smoke in the Valley coming from somewhere

G'day Norm,
Glad to see that the Super 24 will have another life. cool

The smoke down this way is all from Dept of Changing Names fuel reduction burns, up in the hills to the north. With the late hot weather through March, they've only just been able to get these rolling, so they're going a bit flat out.

The visible stack plumes from the power stations here are essentially condensing water vapour - there aren't normally any 'smoke' particles from incomplete combustion, or significant amounts of ash particles - those are nearly all dropped out in the electrostatic precipitators, before the flue gas gets to the bottom of the stack.

So what exits the stack is water vapour + 'permanent gases' - mostly N2 and CO2, with a little NOx and a trace of SO2.

The only time that actual 'smoke' occurs is when a station has to fire up a boiler from cold, after maintenance shuts etc. So they make very sure they do that in the dark of night - there's no such thing as black smoke on a dark night, y'know. wink

Cheers,
Gadge

Hi Gadge, always made me chuckle anytime somebody was having a whinge about the power stations and they would have a reporter standing with the 2 cooling towers in the background choofing out steam. How can you present an argument showing a row of chimneys with nothing visible coming out of them
