Could someone please advise what type of coil I need to purchase to replace the points system in my 3hp B&S manufactured in America 1981?
Thanks

The coil from nearly every Briggs and Stratton mower you see on hard rubbish or beside the road will do. I can't recall any of the horizontal pull starts having points ignition, could be wrong, but fairly confidant

Well Norm, you may not have encountered them [these are all over 30 years old now, after all], but I can assure you that shedloads of points ignition horizontal pull vertical crankshaft Briggs engines were manufactured, from the 1950s onwards. grin

And No not just any B&S Magnetron coil will work. 5HP have their own coils and the 7-16 hp also have different coils. On top that the engines with cast iron blocks coils are reverse polarity.

For aluminum blocks engines any one of the following part numbers > 398593/395489/496914/793281/793281/591420 are used on 2hp to 4hp engines, such as 60000, 80000, 90100, Quattro, and Classic.

With the 591420 being the current part number.

Also it is not necessary to remove the old points and condenser just clip the wire going to it.

At one time there was a simple slip over conversion kit but if I recall correctly it is no longer available.

Here is an update to my last post as I had find the info on my system. This might anyone else that doing the update. BTW I just up on a 1966 Horizontal 170000 series on a Troy Bilt Horse Tiller.

There are three coils used on aluminum, single cylinder Briggs to convert from breaker point condenser to electronic as follows:

398593/395489/496914/793281/793281/591420 are used on 2hp to 4hp engines, such as 60000, 80000, 90100, Quattro, and Classic

397358/697037/395490/395491 are used on 5hp engines such as 130000 series flat heads

398811/395492/398265 are used on 7hp to 16hp single cylinder engines, such as 170000, 190000, 280000, and 310000.

Hi Gadge, I figured there would be horizontal pull starts with points but as I said 90% of the ones you find on hard rubbish will suit what waverider wants

Hi AVB, Atom did sell a points replacement module.
Atom Points Replacement Modules

This module may also work. However, it is intended for a 2 stroke engine.

Thanks all,
Mine is an 80202 - points system has given up. I just wanted to be sure I had the correct part identified. Other than that 36 year old Scott Bonnar and still going strong :-)

Yes both them would work. Matter of fact the Stens Nova II module is reverse polarity capable. I have used them to the Kawasaki ignitor on 4 cycle engines. Most small engine that are points used the wasted spark system which means they fire on every rev.
