Picked up a masport today with the above motor seems to have decent compression spark is getting wet but won't fire even on aerostart so am assuming spark issue I've never touched a "modern" engine so where would be a good place to start

There's a bit of info, and the Op Manual and IPL, in this past thread; https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=57957.With no spark, start with the basics - check the HT lead and its connections, then the stop switch on the throttle control attached to the carby.
Cheers, Gadge

OK so pulled the starter etc off coil had decent amount of rust as did the magnet surface so I gave them a light sand and clean spun it up with a drill have spark now but still no fire even with the old ether down the plug hole so I'm guessing now I need to check the valve clearances and see what they say about everything .
Haven't looked into the carb yet will look into that after I get some sign of life out it I think .

Check your flywheel timing. With the Piston at TDC the magnets should line up with the coil legs. If not then you have a sheared flywheel key. Quite common for them to shear on bar blade mowers from impacts. This throw the ignition timing off enough to make one not start up or light up the fuel mix due lack compression at the time of ignition.
BTW it is a myth that rust on coil legs and flywheel will cause one to not fire. Now the rust can cause not to if it affecting the coil grounding to the crankcase.

So it's lining up just before top dead maybe 10 mm past the posts is that right or far off enough to cause the not running thing

Sorry for taking awhile to respond I has to get a Kubota RTV finished so it could be picked up before the storms arrive today.
If memory serves me well that it just as the ACR closes and yes it would more than enough to cause loss of ignition. Be glad it hasn't fired as it would jerk the pull rope out your hand. I had a few Honda's with bad ACRs that actually dislocated a finger or two. Hurts as like heck too.

That's all good I haven't investigated any further on it yet if I get time I'll pull the flywheel off tomorrow to see if the keys sheared and work out the next thing to do from there. In your opinion is it worth the effort repairing or possibly source another engine I'd like to have this one up and mowing as its a 21" cut and I didn't really pay much for it

If the key does turn out to be sheared and hopefully that is it then it should be good. But I would check for a bent crankshaft on the PTO end before getting to deep into it. These do get bent easily from impact if the impact was sever enough especially when bar blades are used.
And for straightening the crankshaft is usually out of the question on newer engine as the metal is not what it was once. I have heard cases where customers had crankshafts straighten for only it to break off later.
