I just got a Powertorque running, no history on it, starts first pull revs and idles no problems but every now and then there is a clunking noise which is quite audible. Blade carrier and blades are tight, has to be something inside I think, I haven't pulled the motor off the frame to see if it is something like the wheel hitting the coil but it only happens on the odd occasion. Any thoughts?

When this has happened to me it's always the blade carrier/blades, usually the plastic washer is starting to deteriorate. Apart from that I'm not really sure, is the noise occurring at regular intervals or is it randomly occurring?

Hi Tiger, noise is random, can't think what it might be, it is a heavyish noise

I had an otherwise good circa 1979 green Mustang that always made this 'koonk' 'koonk' 'koonk' sound when revving at the limit and under load.
I have the same thing with one of my power torques as well. My theory: the quality of fuel messes the detonation timing and is like a car pinging.
My yellow Vortex makes that sound at low revs and sounds fine when revving!

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Mowerfreak, you could be on the money there, when I started this it smoked the shed out in a couple of seconds, (always a good idea, the spiders don't like it in the shed) it obviously had a lung full of oil in the crank, probably fuel left on, and drained into crank and petrol had evaporated out. Anyway I started it a little while ago and I didn't hear the noise so it may have been the problem, but it wasn't at high revs, just at high idle

Could be a foreign object residing under the flywheel, clunks when it works its way into the path of the moving flywheel.

Almost what it sounds like Bigted, if I get a chance I will pull the top off and see if there is anything in there

Noise seems to have gone now that the smoke has cleared, must have been excess oil in the crankcase

Goodo Norm; it's curious that excess oil could have that effect, though. confused

I always thought lacking oil was far more likely to cause unwanted noises in an engine.

I will run this a few more times to make sure the noise has gone and let you know, I know it doesn't make any sense, more curious than anything

You can always rebuild it or replace it with another one if it pops.
