Hello All!

First up, the info on these forums is invaluable.

These forums have inspired me to restore a 14 inch scott bonnar 45.
I plan to pretty it up a little bit and chuck a honda gx120 on it.

So far I have pulled apart my machine and sent my frame off to get it back to bare metal.
I came stuck with a couple of issues though and would be appreciative if anyone could help me out.

1. My cutter chain adjuster slide is worn and needs replacing but I cant seem to find one anywhere. Is there any alternative solution?

2. I'm about to order my GX 120 but i'm not sure which option to select for drive shaft length. I have a 3/4 Clutch.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi "I hope not",

That'll be a massive engine on a 14 inch machine, actually overkill. It would be more suited to a 17 or 20 inch Scotty.

What's wrong with the current Briggs that's sitting on it ?

BTW that cutter chain adjuster is no longer available and can only be substituted with the series 2 black plastic unit that will require the slot filing out so that it fits in place with a washer and the original nut back on the stud.

Cheers,
BB.

Thanks for the info on the adjuster BB.

As far as the engine is concerned, I've used the gx120s on other equipment before and am a big fan of them.

The current b & s runs but am keen on a new engine.

Hi ICMFO,

Just seems to be a huge overkill on a machine of that smaller size. When you think that SB used a 2 Hp powered Briggs on the 14 inch machine the engine you've selected is just way over the top. If you had a 20 inch Scotty I'd say OK, anyway your call.

BTW, you might find that the engine will not physically fit onto the machine due to its sloper design and thus clashing with the handlebar. You would require a set of handle adaptor plates to space the handlebar out from the chassis.

Cheers,
BB.

That's a better-than-average Briggs, too - I/C means that it has a cast iron sleeved bore, not plain alloy.

Now I'm having second thoughts. I'll have a look at the current b & s offerings and keep the I/c for a 17 inch I have that I want to turn into a groomer.

What new Briggs would you recommend for a 14 inch

Hello ICMFO

That would be a great choice.
I hope it all goes well.

Hi ICMFO and Mod CJ,

I'm pretty sure that you may well have the same clearance issue with the new style Briggs engine as it is of the similar sloper style build as the Honda's etc. and as such those handlebars may well clash. I have fitted one to a 17 inch machine without any problems but the 14 inch machine is much tighter in space and if that is the case you'll have to get a set of handlebar adaptor plates to space out the lower section of the handlebar assembly away from the chassis thus giving you plenty of clearance. Any good Briggs Dealer should be able to order those plates for you if required.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi ICMFO,

These are the adaptor plates.

[Linked Image]

These are laying as they would be bolted up to the chassis with the two holes going directly up to the machine using the existing handlebar attaching bolts and then the handle being bolted to the rear ward holes on the plate and having the slot at the top allows one to adjust the handlebar to whatever angle they want it to be at.

The drawings of these plates is found in the following thread,

Cheers,
BB.
