Hello ODK History Lovers

This Catcher was Victas first production catcher.

Before their rear discharge machines (of 1962-63), this was a side discharge catcher
designed for the new Victa Sheerline and Four-Star of 1960.

This was a beautiful all-metal design that resembled a motorcycle side-car! This
styling matched beautifully with Victas first alloy chassis the streamlined Sheerline.

This catcher is not common today. Back then, the vast majority of catchers were purchased
as an option - This one for about 6 Guineas (about 7, and about 10% the cost of a lawnmower).

I guess the vast majority of purchases did not include a catcher for side-discharge mowers.
That story would be quite different for the rear discharge machines. That design intended
grass catching, and there would have been a high uptake on the option.

PART TWO - PARTS LIST
Parts lists can be revealing; but they can be deceptive too.
My 1972 Green Book covers the general use of the design.

The earliest reference is to the Model 4, that replaced the Model 2.
A close reading of the parts list suggests that the Model 2 [and Model 1?] had a
support rod (item 15) to the handle, because of the weight of the catcher and
contents. The Model 4 removed this. Perhaps it was deemed unnecessary.

The revisions of the catcher appear to be the Model 10 and Model 12. These would
have fitted later models the Consul, Pace Special and Special 4, the Pace
Utility
and Victa Special.

PART THREE Manual
We are lucky at least one manual survives a 4 page booklet that gives some
detailed information. It shows fitting instructions but also covers the need
to fit discharge blades to the blade holder.

Acknowledgement: Many thanks to Member Kye Turnbull in supplying a scan of the
short manual. The instruction booklet must be for the earliest model the
Sheerline and Four Star. Note the reference to the handle support for the
catcher, and the fitting of the fluted catcher blades.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: A big thank you to Kye for the scanning of the images of his
rare document. It has provided valuable information on how these early catchers
worked.

These auction images appear to be of a Model 4 Catcher.
There is no support to the handle...?
NOTE: the beautiful Victa transfer of the day.
