Hi guys, I was hoping you might be able to assist. I have an 80's tractor 8 mower that I'm restoring but have one of the front wheels rubbing on the inside tyre. I'm sure this is a common fail. I'm thinking it will probably be a bearing that has excess wear. Before I order the parts is anyone able to confirm my thoughts?

If so from the parts manual I think it would be part GT 437 = Wheel hub Outer and Inner?

Gday Aussie,

Do you mean that the tyre is scuffing or that the inside of the tyre is rubbing the deck at full lock? If it's the former then bearings as you suggest and perhaps the wheel is worn if the bearing has been loose in it for a long time.

If it's the latter then I've done that one too on my daily drive. Play and wear in the bolts and bushings in the tie rod (bar) that runs across the machine are the thing. Also, the stops that are a welded part of the bar , I found, left a bit to be desired and felt adjustment would be nice to allow for play, build tolerance, etc. also, I reckoned the bar length was wrong for ideal tracking and best turning circle. I ended up making a new bar of what I thought was ideal length and welded some adjustable stops to it. Works well, me thinks. Interestingly I note that the evolutions that followed are adjustable for length and have adjustable stops too.

Hi Prd, to be honest I haven't had time to strip it down to see the wear as I'm working 6 days at the moment. What I'm trying to do is strip it down, repair and back together again in a day. It's not looking like it will if I'm to do it properly. I'm keen to see what you did..Even more.so if I can retrofit from evolution.

Is it the king pin bushes that have worn out? replacing them is simple depending on the wear on the other bits

But yes, if it's a deck rub issue then I can show you what I did if your interested. Also, I just had a quick look at the old Evo outside and I think it could be retofitted. Understand this was two seconds look with torch and steel rule

I will have a few hours tomorrow after work and pull the wheel off to have a look. The parts manual is that clear. Hopefully its just the bearing.

I managed to pull the wheel off to have a look....for others reading there is an inner and outer bearing that sits on either side of the wheel hub. This then slides onto the axle shaft...if that's what its called. Anyway shaft is fine. The outer bearing was dry and the inner bearing had collapsed. So much so it was rubbing against the aluminum wheel hub and has stuffed the seat where the bearing sits in. I have replaced both inner and outer bearings ..just took a sample to Bearing Wholesaler in Melbourne its a K35110F Unground bearing 5/8 x 1.3/8 x 13/32...$6 each. Its the same bearing for both sides.

I am based in Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. I do need to find a replacement front wheel. Does anyone have one?

I guess you are Kevin? I have a pile of ride on wheels out the back, not sure what is there, I sold the 2 sets of Greenfield wheels I had and at this stage I'm not sure if I am going to wreck the Tractor 12 I have here or put another motor in it, pretty busy with the push mowers at the moment. The Victa wheels will probably fit but they are smaller and depends if you are restoring the mower or wanting to use it

Hi Norm, Yes mate I'm him. I'm sure a wheel will turn up soon. Lots of people parting them out, hopefully. I've glued the bearing in the hub and it seems to be holding for now.

As you know I'm looking for a catcher or trading up to a Westood with catcher as my next project.

If the glue doesn't hold up I can probably make up a sleve to fit the hub that will hold the bearing. The catchers do come up occasionally but a bit rare in Victoria

Norm I thought of that...like a reverse speedy sleeve but probably not worth the effort. There are tractor style type wheels on ebay that look pretty cool with a 5/8 id for the axle...thinking about those too.

Trust me most things I do these days are not worth the effort, but I do them anyway. Are the wheels on ebay, Greenfield or just wheels, I probably have just wheels in the shed if that is what you are after?

Hi Norm, at this stage I will see how long the glue keeps the bearing in place before doing anything else but I do have a standing order for another greenfield front wheel tractor 8-12

Ok...Tried mowing the lawn and the wheel collapses and rubs against axle. In parts book there are nylon bushes X2 GT1179. Maybe these are worn? Does anyone know where to get them? Norm I may have to take you up machining the wheel. I must admit the bearings are a bad design for the intended purpose.

Hi Norm, I've send through an SMS and we can take it from there. I also removed the tie rod (23) and noticed both ends to be out of round so will need to weld them and re drill. This combination of wear must be causing the issue. Kev

I would like to thank Norm for his time and goodwill today. I took my tie rod bar (steering arm to the non technical) and wheel hub to Norm's place (or should I say lawnmower heaven). There is nothing Norm doesn't have or can't make. He quickly confirmed the ride on Victa mower wheels are a direct replacement for the greenfield 11x400's with same id on the rims...providing a matching pair. In fact the Victa's are a better design in my opinion with a grease nipple to lubricate the axle. He also drilled out the tie rod end holes which were out of round and turned 2 metal bushes and welded them in place. All for a small financial donation. It's rare to meet people of the same caliber as Norm who are prepared to help and share their knowledge with others for the love of the job / hobby. Thanks mate.
