the 16.5 briggs on my cox lawn boss (31E777-0118-B1) stops intermittently, it seems to be the plug that goes in to the solenoid - its a bit sloppy and giving it a wriggle usually fixes it.Is there a welch plug l could replace it with? Its a Nikki carby....

Won't a be welch but it is a M8-1.00 (French) screw or at least is the measurement of Nikki Fuel Solenoid PN 699915 here. Shorten screw as needed and use sealing washer.

This screw size may be more readily available in your area than mine it seems the local hardware stores only carries SAE screws even in a space related city of Huntsville, AL, USA.

so....I found a suitable screw, cut it to size and put on a fibre washer. Removed the solenoid and fitted the screw, and replaced the leads with a single lead to earth - keeps blowing fuses. Can't figure out whats happening?
In the meantime l've put the solenoid back in but would like to know/understand what l'm not understanding LOL

Of course if your tying both leads to ground as one is +12 vdc and other was ground. Either lead needs grounding when the solenoid is removed and definitely not attached to each other as the ground leading to the coil is already grounded on the other end and attaching the +12 vdc lead to the grounded lead it will only cause a short circuit to ground blowing fuses.

so, ignoring the ground lead from the solenoid....what happens to the pos lead going to the solenoid when ignition is turned on? to complete the circuit doesn't it go to earth?

Let's make sure I am on the same page here. You are removing the solenoid; hence the need for the screw plug in the carburetor fuel bowl; right?

When you are removing the solenoid there is no need for the electrical circuit any more. It is only there to activate the solenoid therefore no longer needed.
The Grey wire is the +12V dc and simply deadheaded with tape or with whatever prevents it from grounding out. Here I would use head shrink tubing and crimp seal the end with a pair pliers after heating.
