Hi all! Just replaced an old tecumseh with a briggs into a greenfield fastcut.

Everything seemed to run smoothly...I took a punt and simply plugged the new briggs 19hp pro into the previous wire plug which was a tecumseh 13hp. (same plug and wires seemed to line up in the plug) started first go, seemed ok. but did not idle after a few goes but starts fine. dripped petrol (gas) into the air filter and it ran whilst doing this whilst at low revs. but when I went to see if it would run at full throttle it cut out and good amount of smoke came out.

has anyone got any tips?
I probably should re-wire properly, but it could run without changing anything (not idle)

I haven't had anything to do with those big motors but just taking a stab, is the motor you have just fitted new or second hand? I assume these run magneto so that really only leaves the carby as the problem. As for the plug and re-wiring, seems like it is working, all you then have to prove is that it is charging the battery, put a volt meter on that and you will know straight away

Has the Briggs got a fuel cut solenoid that screws into the bottom of the carby. If it has then check you are getting power to it and that it is working.

As Fixdit said, depending on how old the engine is of course, it should have the solenoid on the bottom of the carby. The solenoid's purpose is to prevent the engine 'running on' after the ignition is turned off.

As Norm also said, the ignition shouldn't be the cause as it uses a magneto.

See the excerpt from the B&S workshop manual below:

Testing Fuel Shut Off Solenoid
The fuel shut off solenoid is controlled by the
equipment ignition switch. With the switch OFF,
the solenoid plunger closes, stopping the fuel
flow at the fixed main jet. With the switch in the
ON and START positions, the solenoid plunger
opens, allowing normal fuel flow. If operating
properly, the solenoid will click when the switch
is turned ON and OFF.

If convenient, can you post the engine model, type, & code? It should be etched onto the top of the rocker cover.

The red arrow in the picture below is pointing to the solenoid.
