Hi all. I have just serviced and restored an SB 45 with an 80201 Briggs motor. During service I cleaned the carb, cleaned cylinder head, replaced air filter, oil and petrol, installed new gaskets and upgraded to magnetron coil.

I tested the motor for the first time yesterday and while it runs, it gets very hot. I'm not entirely sure how hot it should get, but it seems to be a by too hot considering it was only running for approx 5 minutes.
When I went to push the stop switch, I received a shock from the motor! The new magnetron coil did not come with a rubber boot, so I installed it much the same way as the oil coil with the metal clip going straight into the spark plug and then I imagine the stop switch just cuts that circuit? When the motor stopped, a bit of white smoke then came out of the new muffler. I filled the motor with oil as per instructions, so I don't think that I've over-filled it at all. Could mismatched head bolts cause this white smoke?

Can anyone suggest why I would have received a shock and also some things that could cause the motor to run so hot?

Running too lean can make a motor run hotter than normal. Make sure you have the mixture right after cleaning the carby. What style of stop switch does it have? A stop switch has one side basically connected to the output of the coil and the other to earth. If the earth side isn't making good contact it will use you as the pathway, which is always nice. :-)

That style is always a bit iffy about how well it is earthed. Either insulate it as suggested by Norm, or put a good solid earth on to it with a bit of braid and a nut and bolt.

Thanks guys. I put a rubber piece over the top of the stop switch and that has done the trick.
The petrol tank seems to have some residue in it so I flushed it out with more fuel and when I put it back on the motor, it ran a lot better.

Hopefully it's good to go now smile

Hi Em,

Check out the PM I sent you as this will explain exactly why you are getting a bigger boot than normal.

Cheers,
BB.
