Hi All,
Recently pulled the 20 in for a quick tidy up and adjustment before we hit the mowing season. Adjusted the reel etc and felt the clutch was not operating as well as before. Removed the clutch and pto shaft and split it to look at the bearing and spring but could see no major issues. The pto bearing was cleaned and greased also. I did oil the bearing a little and re assembled. On first run the clutch was clunkey and noticed it was shuddering back and fourth causing a bit of noise. Some adjustment did solve the issue but clutch is slow to respond and is very trickey to adjust from a good drive point to creaping the reel. Would this suggest a clutch bearing and more likley spring issue? Also what are the thoughts on the greasing or oiling of clutch bearing?

Did you check the clutch cork for wear by any chance?

I'm just wondering if the drive chain from the PTO shaft is too tight now and is pulling on the PTO drive sprocket thus pulling the clutch cone slightly off centre creating a grab, let go, grab scenario ?

Cheers,
BB.

Thanks guys. Both good pointers so will double check. Clutch cork was new on rebuild but will check wear etc. Any thoughts on lubrication of clutch bearing?

Hi Mr.Jones,

As far as lubrication is concerned it can be done a couple of ways.

I generally use a large syringe(available at any chemist over the counter)and fill it with grease. I file the exit point where the needles fit over with a flat on each side so that it fits into a small crevice without much leakage. Then I'll grab the bearing which you should previously clean out in clean petrol or similar to easure it is thoroughly spotless inside.

Now wiggle the inner bearing race so that you create a slight gap between the inner race and the side shield and squeeze some grease in through the gap. Do this around the bearing at various points but not too much. You should now be able to feel that the bearing has a smooth running action.

The other way is to get some thicker grade oil and force it into the bearing via the same side access. Once again remember to clean it thoroughly prior to doing this.

Cheers,
BB.
