Hi Forum Friends,

I am a first time poster, but a keen lurker on the side, reading most of the post in this forum.

I recently acquired as SB45 14" and I am not sure about either sending a few dollars making it work or getting rid of it.
I am not sure what size the engine is, I am only assuming its a B@S, and I am thinking about 2.5hp.
The numbers I could find are
60102 0302 1 7007271

The ID plate only gave a mower number, 45 22228

With that I am thing the date of the engine is 27-7-70, if so would this match the model of the SB frame

As you can see someone as had a go at painting it in a pretty terrible green colour, I would like to get it at least looking good and if I can get a colour close to original and spaying it myself, I would do that.

I am 100% certain it needs a need bedknife, I am not sure about the bottom plate? and the reel, if I could just get the reel sharpened it could save a few dollars.

Any advise from looking at the photo's would help me in my decision in what to do
The motor starts 2nd pull, so it seems to go ok

Looking at the pics, I hopefully have shown the most important parts

Hello Bucko,

I guess from reading your post you need to make a decision on what you really want to do. Yes the bed knife is totally shickered and will require replacement and a regrind along with the reel as well.

Your drivetrain looks perfect but totally unlubricated and this must be rectified urgently, or have you degreased it recently ?

Your engine date is correct and I'd say it's the original power plant on that chassis. It will more than likely be either a 2 Hp or 2.25 Hp unit.

Like I've said, you have to make a call on what end result you want, only then can I advise you of what to do.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi BB,

Thanks for that info, I only picked up the mower last week, so I will at least lubricate the drive train area, what do you recommend for this?

Its good news about the drivetrain, I am guessing it may have been replaced as its in good condition, compared to the bedknife, or is this something that doesn't wear as much?

I am not that much of a mechanic, like some of the folk on here, but I could be willing to give this a go in the restoration side, seeing that drive train is ok, but it all depends on what money needs to be spent on other stuff, as it's the less desirable 14" model, and with a small 2 or 2 1/4hp engine

Does the reel look ok to you?, or will that need replacing as well?.
With the age of the motor/chassis, what model would it be?, I guess a series 1?

Thanks
Bucko

Hi All,

I have decided to restore this little beauty, giving it hopefully another 45 years of life.

With that could I ask for some advice, the model ID just says 45 with the mower number as shown in the above pics, does this have a particular model number, also the engine numbers listed in the photo's above, is anyone able to advise if its a 2hp or 2 1/4hp.

Initially was this a white engine, if so does anyone know the original colour.

After reading the forums, has anyone come up with the correct colour of hammertone?

Many thanks for any advice that has been offered and hopefully will be.

Thanks
Bucko

Hi Bucko

While your engine serial numbers are different to mine it does look very similar to mine. My engine colour is a shade of silver.

From your photos it looks like the original hammertone is still there behind the sprockets if you wipe away the grime.

I'll be eagerly watching your progress. Good luck with with the resto.

Cheers
