Hi guys, Have a Scorpion 2.8kVa Pure Sinewave genset in for repair and it has me stumped. It has a Mitsubishi 4 stroke engine. Everything seems right on it, valves all operate correctly and lash is right, has good healthy spark, excellent compression and the fuel is good and clean. It will start first pull of the cord everytime, then immediately die. It will start again immediately but just die again straight away. Like, maybe 4 revolutions each time and then just stops. Any ideas before I go crazy?

Trev, I would be looking at a carby problem, blocked jet or something

Hmmmm,
Mitsubishi Scorpion. That's your problem ... My Uncle had one of them. Broke down just about every day.

Hi Trev, does it keep running on Aerostart? If it does then i'd also be looking at carby issues. But my first guess would be the low oil pressure switch if it's got one. Try disconnecting it and any other kill switch features one at a time to eliminate which one it could be. Cheers, Ted

Thanks BigTed. I had disconnected the low oil switch already, no difference. The On/Off switch is working correctly. As to running it on aerostart, by the time I have let go the start rope and grabbed the can it is already stopped. I need to grow a few extra arms. And Pete, I hatewetsocks,

I think you might have the car and the generator mixed up. :-)
I have removed the needle and seat and sprayed carby cleaner through all the jets Norm and they seems to be clear but I guess I'll have to pull it right off and give it a manual clean to be certain.
Will let you know if I get it sorted. Or maybe have to throw a Chonda at it.

Trev, I have no idea about this motor but unless you can get the main jet out and clean it you are always pushing uphill. If the motor is not knocking or blowing smoke then no reason to replace it

Problem solved guys. After much binding in the marsh, and checking all the usual suspects with no success, it turned out that the Mitsubishi has a fine mesh screen in the muffler outlet that was almost completely blocked. After about 4 revolutions enough back pressure had built up in the muffler to stop the engine but it would bleed off enough to start it again straight away and run for another 4 revs. Now the weird thing is that I know for a fact that the generator had been running perfectly the day before it decided it wasn't going to go any more. How it blocked up in a matter of a few hours is still a puzzle. Pulled the muffler off and cleaned the screen and it is now running perfectly again.
