G'day Ishi

A warm welcome from me too.

I need to ask an important question...
We know the Wipac Magister was used here on our own Scott Bonnars, but
also on Australian made Villiers 2-stroke Torgue Major engines.

We have no evidence that British engines also adopted the system.
Do you have any information than can help us and the record?

Welcome!

Recently I aquired two J.A.P 16h engines by the year code stamped on the main body they were of 1942 vintage (16H was also made by Villiers after their take over of J.A.P). These two engines had never been used and we're still in their off line state cork bungs in the spark plug holes carbs masked up etc. They both have meg esters on them. From what I can make out J.A.P only manafactured engines during the war years for the government. The next thing is both engines are as all 16Hs two strokes and both are for T.V.O use start with two stroke and switch over to T.V.O.In my readings all J.A.P 16h engines were manafactured for Landmaster for use on their L150 rotovator These were I think assembled in Australia and Celon. I have a couple of L150 machines on is 1958 the other is 1960 that is going by the J.A P markings I can not tell by the landmaster markings. We're these engines destined for one of the small war effort motor bikes and never used and so bought out of store after the war and assembled in their presant form with T.V.O specs.for perhaps an overseas assembler. One was cleaned up and believe it or not started.when I have time and can get to my computer I will carry on with this story and post some photos. It makes sense that a T.V.O two stroke would need a good ignition spark so was the megester developed for T.V.O two strokes. Then when petrol became more readily available just used up on any thing?
Your site has more info main on the megester than I have found so far In the UK nobody seems to know much about this strange 16H.
Write again soon
Cheers Len

G'day Len

That is the most amazing story.
Like the UK, then, little seems to be known about the 16H or the
Magister units. But we now have confirmation that the system was
used on motors in the UK - it was a UK invention after all!

I have also just learnt what T.V.O. was. I had no idea.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tractor_vaporising_oil

It appears to me that the trade-off for a more intense spark was
the duration ... it was shorter. I guess JAP felt it had advantage
when using T.V.O. You have posed a most interesting question on that!

The implication: was the post-war use of the Magister (with petrol
readily available) merely marketing, with no real advantage over
conventional magneto units.

I'm not a technical guy, but the ads here have said that the Magister
was particularly suited to 2-strokes. I guess, again, that any petroil
mixture impeded combustion - and T.V.O moreso - when compared with 4-strokes.
We have no evidence the Magister was used on any 4-stroke.

Cheers

HI
Thanks for the reply I do know for sure that there is at least one more engine the same as the two I have as the seller of these two has kept a third as a curiosity He said he got them from a farmers barn [
. As promised a couple more pictures of the engines several other differences are on the standard 16H they use a 391/19 amal on the T.V.O version it is a 397/3 also a wipac fuel sediment bowl is fitted. If I come across any mention of the Magister being used on a four stroke I will let you know.

TVO is the same as the 'power kerosene' that used to be available in Oz, it seems. I've never before seen a 2-stroke engine that used it - quite a few four-strokes though.

This looks like those engines - maybe the previous owner?

Interesting to see the Magister units fitted to an engine of that vintage, if the date is correct. As far as we've been able to work out, the Magister system came on the market here in 1962. The patent applications for it were in 1959.

One possibility is that these were produced as a bit of a 'last gasp' on JAP's part, to cash in old parts stocks. JAP went belly-up in 1963, apparently.

Cheers,
Gadge
