Got a newer Briggs 750 DOV on Husqvarna LC18 mower, which has an automatic choke. Consistently takes 3-4 pulls to start from cold, but runs great, restarts hot ok. I've had a thorough inspection of the carb and the only thing i can find is the actual choke butterfly is such a poor fit/too small even when fully closed there are large gaps all around it. Tried what i could, gave up and ordered a brand new genuine carb hoping it would be better. Of course it's exactly the same 2-4 pulls to start cold, anyone else had experience with this? Carb does not appear adjustable in anyway to try compensate for this.

Hi Dan, I think that is about what you can expect, not having a primer on them to squirt a bit of fuel in is the problem, you have to rely on the choke to create enough suction for it to be able to draw enough fuel in to get it to fire. If you spray a bit of starter fluid onto the air filter you will most likely find it will start first pull. I bought a new Victa Corvette with a Honda motor on it some years ago and from day one it required a squirt on the filter to get it to start if it had been sitting for anytime. Hot start fine

It call having to file the choke plate to where it fits and seals better. I have seen this on larger carbs where they don't close complete as they are hitting side of the carburetor at the air bleeds. Once done it should close better and start better. I currently got a genny is the shop that is mine that I am having to close up the choke plate holes so it can e in 40F weather.

Shouldn't need to do it but sometimes it takes it. Just like I need to re-jet brand new carbs here because the engine manufactures trying to meet US EPA Regs. They are surging because they are too lean until fully warm up after 5 minutes.

That's about what i thought too, give me a bloody primer anyday, 1st pull starts everytime. Most other carbs atleast the butterfly is the right size and shape. I attacked the old one with the file to get the shape a bit better, i bent it back slightly at the air bleeds but might give filing that area a go this time. This is Huayi carb btw seems it was replaced with a Nikki later on which may not suffer this issue however i cant find any stock of the Nikki (Briggs Part No 595509)
