I've tried searching for the answer but can't find it so I've started this.

I've recently acquired an old Rover slasher with a Quantum Briggs and Stratton engine. It requires some cleaning up to get going again. I'm new to Briggs engines so this will be a good learning curve I figure,

However a few things that i'd like some assistance with.

These are the numbers stamped on the engine. I roughly understand some of their meaning. It has 12 inch cubic capacity and it was made in 1991.

But what does that translate into horse power??

and How do I use this information to order parts? Like gaskets. How do I know i'm getting the correct gasket?

I know for some of you this is all basic information but your help would be appreciated. Thank you

Heres a site to look up part lists & Manuals for briggs motors this would make it around 4hp because the 13 series are 5hp+, from what I know

put in the model number then a dash( - ) then put only the first 4 digits of type number... If the Model number only has 5 digits then you need to add a 0 as the first number... The Type number is important, when looking up a part number it will reference certain variations... the variations are listed under "NOTE" that's where the type number will matter... Hope this is helpful
OH and also the date code comes into it now and then aswell which are the last group called "code" the numbers read: (first 2 digits Year next 2 digits Month next 2 digits are day and the last digits are Factory reference)

It's necessary to be careful when reading the numbers of a Quantum; the Model Number often has an uppercase letter in it. And that Code looks to have one digit too many, to me. The standard Briggs code format is YYMMDDxx.

Although they are all 190cc/12ci side valve engines, the 12 series Quantums [first model only was 10ci] came out with horsepower ratings from 4.0 to 6.5, before Briggs went to rating by torque output. If it still has a model sticker on the cowling, that may give us a lead on the rating for that particular engine; e.g. the XTS50 is rated at 5hp, the XTS60 at 6hp and so on.

Part number supersessions [i.e. where a part number has changed during the model run] are shown in the IPL, usually by Code.

As SD says, where different parts/assemblies, e.g. carbies, are fitted to differing Type Numbers, this will also be noted in the IPL.

With gaskets, these will be shown clearly in the IPL, so you just have to compare the pic with the old gasket. That said, it's very rare for gasket shapes to change within a model run.

Looks like I copied the code down wrong. It is actually 91110756. Which is still 8 digits. SO don't know about the extra digit you mention??

I want to get it working again. I guess restore is a good word but probably not totally appropriate. I'll clean the deck up, get rid of the rust, patch the holes and re paint it. The engine I want to learn. So taking it apart, cleaning it up and rebuilding is something I'd like to do just for my own knowledge.

No worries Nolan; I got that digit count wrong, but the code number sequence just didn't look right. So it was made 7th November 1991.

That engine is one of the better Quantums; the I/C marking means that it has a cast iron cylinder liner. It would once have had a sticker in the centre of the starter housing, that had the model designation. The only major problem with Quantums is that the fuel tank tends to crack around the seam.

That base it's on doesn't look like a Rover to me; maybe an early series Granberg Bushman?
Definitely not a Supaswift or Masport, anyway. Is it 18" or 21" cut"?

I'll load a pic of the blades. They measure 500mm across which is a little more than 19 inches.

I assume that's what you mean but the cut size. That's how novice I am.
