SENIOR TECHNICIAN & HISTORIAN
Hi Jack ,
I don't think Whirlwind copied Masport,if you look at the first model Whirlwind 1955 it looks like
Whirlwind were well aware of the Lawn-Boy design, so I think they knew about the offset wheel design
from Lawn-Boy too.

Pics of first model Whirlwind are from Vintagemowers.net

Regards Max.

Forum Historian
G'day Max
I was hoping you would come forward on this.
Many thanks. smile

I have said on these great forums that AUS rotaries took two
different design trajectories- between our unique 'toe-cutters' and the
skirted bases that appeared at the same time.

Whilst toe-cutters were AUS original, skirted bases appear to have had two influences ...
In other words, three trajectories were at play in the 1940's and 1950's.

AUS skirted bases took cues: from both UK and USA designs ... between the
Rotoscythe and the Lawn-boy designs.

In fact, our first rotary - the Tecnico - took cues from UK and USA designs.

It is no surprise, then, that you have said this.
I'm glad you have noted this.

Cheers

Jack
