Hi all,

I have a MTD 38 Cut Yard Machine 6 Speed Ride On Mower (13A1762F670) with a Tecumseh 13.5hp (0V358EA-206940F) engine, but the mower now has a couple of small problems.

1. The starts motor a Tecumseh 37425 has a bent armature.
2. The Flywheel (611253) has broken magnets and a cracked Flywheel nut (650594).

Just wondering if anyone out there has any second hand parts that would fit this series mower and does anyone know if you can buy replacement magnets for this Flywheel maybe.

How the dickens did you manage to bend a starter armature and crack the magnets?

I would think was done after the flywheel nut broke allowing the flywheel to wobble. Just thinking out loud, as I don't hardly see any Tecumseh engines here since the the original group went out business.

Everyone is avoiding them like the plague around here.

If I remember correctly the magnets were never available separately for these flywheels but at the flywheel assemblies are still available; although, rough on the wallet.

I think I may be able to help on both counts if you still need these bits. I will have a look in the big shed after brekky and let you know. Email me a phone number to tscanlon@webone.com.au

Sorry to get your hopes up. The starter I've got is marked 36680 28007 and it comes from a TVM220 11HP. It also has the number 0690 stamped on the case but the mounting setup is completely different. Overall length is 165mm. Could the armatures be the same?
The flywheel comes from the same motor but I can't find it to check the number.I will keep looking.

Hi all,
Had a Brain Storm good1John

Am I correct in saying that the Alternator on this engine (stator & magnets under the flywheel) are ONLY used for charging the battery ? (Some stators have a separate charge coil as part of the ignition system on the stator, it looks like this one doesnt)

The CDI module must have the charge coil built into the encapsulated ignition module by the looks, the only wire from the module apart from the Spark plug lead is a dark green wire which is used for the Ignition Shut-Off. (it grounds this wire)

[Linked Image]

On the white connector from the stator
Red - Alternator D.C. + Lead goes to Red/Black stripped wire & a looped Red wire not connected.
Yellow - Alternator A.C. Lead goes to Blue wire

On the same white connector from the CDI module......
Dark Green - Ignition Shut-Off Lead goes to Yellow wire

So whats wrong with just taking all the broken magnets out of the flywheel (now NO charging circuit) and just starting it from a separate car battery (because the on board battery is dead anyway) straight onto the starter motor and just charge the car battery up later separately.

The only problem I can see with this idea is that the flywheel maybe out of balance with no magnets on it.

Your thoughts please

lol"I know just fix it properly"

Hi All,

It has 3 Amp DC & 5 Amp AC split Alternator output.

This unit combines a 3 Amp DC system used to charge the battery and a 5 Amp AC system used to power the mowers front lights.

Located in the red wire of the harness is a diode which converts the AC (alternating current) to DC (direct current half wave) for charging the battery.
The yellow wire provides the AC voltage for the lighting circuit.

Minimum Output Voltage @ specified RPM for testing.
MODELS OHV 13.5 - 17.0 (3/5 amp split)
3 Amp DC (Red wire)
2500 RPM - 6.5 Volts DC
3000 RPM - 9.0 Volts DC
3600 RPM - 11.0 Volts DC

5 Amp AC (Yellow wire)
2500 RPM - 15.0 Volts AC
3000 RPM - 18.0 Volts AC
3600 RPM - 22.0 Volts AC

A good charging system should look something like this.
Engine Stopped, battery voltage 12.54 Volts
Engine Running @ 3000 RPM, battery voltage 14.18 Volts

Well there you go..............

Hi all,

On closer inspection of the Stator, its had it too...........

There are 3 damaged ones with coils & 2 without

Almost now cheaper to buy a new 13.5hp engine, or just put it all back together and wait until i can find some second hand parts to fix it from somewhere.

Depends on if you want to charge the battery or just mow the lawns

Only way to find out is to remove the magnets and give it a try, I would not expect you would be able to notice any vibration being a single cylinder motor anyway. As for no battery I replaced the battery on one with a jump starter pack, for about the same cost of a new battery, and it also has a compressor to pump the tyres and a built in charger

I suppose i will give it a try and see what happens, it can't make things any worse then they are now anyway, fine on the jump starter pack.

Thing is, are the cracked magnets actually causing a problem? If they are just for charging circuit, and you are not going to use it, just leave them where they are, perhaps with a bit of epoxy to cement them in place.
Never make the mistake of assuming something you do can't make things worse :-)

Hi all,

I decided not to worry about the charging system for now until i can get some second hand parts to fix it.

In the interim to get the mower up and running again i have removed all the broken magnets from the Flywheel which there was only two still left glued in anyway and then balanced the Flywheel with some lead weights.

(60 grams added equivalent to one magnet)

Looks good John, How did you hold it to balance it and what did you use to glue the lead weights, JB Weld?

Well to balance it, good question:

I pondered on this and was trying to think of all the ways i could balance the flywheel, and came up with this not very scientific answer, i figured that the two magnets either side at the top would cancel each others weight out, and that left only the magnet at the bottom, so i just weighed it and @ 60 grams i added the replacement weight in lead.

Yes i used JB Weld to glue the lead on.

New Flywheel below for comparison
