Hi guys,

So I'm seriously considering getting a Cordless Impact Wrench for repairs, not only mowers but to work on my car too, though the price for them can be costly .. but.. I did come across a Drill Driver / Impact Driver combo at Masters...

[Linked Image from i998.photobucket.com]

just wondering, does anyone here use Impact Drivers instead of the Impact Wrench when working on their mower? Are they effective/powerfull enough to remove stubborn bolts?

What about the nut that keeps the flywheel down, do you think it could remove that?

@ $125 for the combo.. seems like a decent ptice.. not sure how many times ill use it though... whereas the impact wrench I was looking at (RYOBI).. ive seen as a combo for $300 some time ago..

Thoughts ?

Hi there,

In my experience these are good for small jobs when power is not available, as for taking off a Flywheel nut, i always use an Air Impact Gun/Rattle Gun with proper impact sockets as normal sockets can be damaged.

Hope this helps.

I have a Bosch Brushless Impact driver, Love it, use it everywhere. wheel nuts as well.
It has a 1/2in socket head, heaps of power, made rusted boat trailer bolts undo like westen star butter. 3 different torque settings

Thanks guys smile

I originally purchased an electric 240V impact.. died after 3 uses smirk .. massive thing it was, seriously needed both hands to hold it .. decided on refund instead of exchange.
Would certainly like a cordless impact wrench, though they're a bit of a cost which I'm keeping an eye out for a sale.. otherwise figure for smaller jobs, impact driver with adapter might do the job (or most of the job).. I dont have any impact sockets, just the standard chrome.. which are mostly 12 point too smirk .. I guess depending on how often I needed an impact, might have to shop around for a couple of impact sockets.

What is the difference between an "impact" and a "rattle" is it just an a descriptive difference or how they operate.

We use the half inch drive Panasonic at work for nuts and bolts and not uncommon for us to be rattling up 16mm construction bolts and it works a treat. We also have the 1/4" hex rattlers which are for screws and smaller things. Think about it, If you'd use a socket set then use the 1/2" rattler. If it's small and more like a cordless drill appropriate job then the 1/4" he is right. Having said that I use the Ryobi 18 volt set at home and when mine was new I used it to rattle sme bat tern screws into the 60 year old hardwood frame of my house (I did pre drill) and it worked a treat. I have used my 1/4" hex to remove mower flywheel nuts. I was given an old Talon mower quite some time ago that the "repair bloke" gave a service to and then found he couldn't remove the plastic cowling to repair the broken pull cord. My rattler shook the stripped bolt just enough for the threads to bite and I had it off in two minutes! (Oh the punishment I gave that poor old mower after that).
So For mowers and small stuff a rattler such as shown above would be just fine. I still plan to get myself a 1/2" drive for the car and tractor etc.
