Hi ODK members and Jack just by luck have another Singer mower had to drive a whole 20ks to pick it up
Not seen this one mentioned anywhere
Look at the fuel tank shape
What is the engine ?
Yes I know what it is a Hurricane
So Jack where is this one going to fit in the history? Or have I got your grey matter turning over a bit fast
Ian

Hi Ian

Every ad I have for the rear catcher machine depicts the 4-stroke Villiers.
Each ad makes reference to a Deluxe 2-stroke. I had assumed that meant
a Villiers Torque Major Deluxe.

So Ian, your guess is as good as mine.
Is the Hurricane original? Maybe...

This is the first rear catcher machine I have seen, so a
great compliment to your other one.

Hi Ian

I thought I recognised this machine.
From Vintage Mowers website:

I think this confirms that you do have an original machine.
The 2-stroke Singer used a Hurricane engine!

A great new find.

Hi Jack is the 'Deluxe 2-stroke' a 3 bolt flange?
There is no extra holes everything fits as if it is right
Ian
Your post got in before mine

Yes, the Torque Major had a three bolt base.

p.s. That is an unusual feature - the front cross axle
also acts as a lift handle.

Good find there Ian, and it fills in another bit of the
record on the not-so-well-known Singer Lawnmower.

I will update the History Record to reflect this new find.

Hi new to forum trying to find info on a singer mower I was given its in good running order its a side discharge and found this site helpful yet what puzzles me is it has a Briggs and Stratton engine and cant find any reference in singer using them so I thought might not be original but it looks factory sprayed green which makes me think it the original engine and has pulley setup on shaft for accessories attachment Ive read about ,anyway just wondered what you guys think

Hello Mick P
It is a replacement engine.
The series of numbers stamped above the muffler should date the Briggs to the 1980s.
That green is a Briggs factory colour.

Hope this helps

Hi Mick P
I forgot to welcome you to these forums.

I think that is a sensible approach.
The main thing is that a rare AUS lawnmower is saved.
This does seem to be a venture only Singer (Australia) undertook.

Your late 1970s B&S is a great motor.
I'm guessing this is a 13 Series 5HP, rather than the 10 Series 4HP.
Either way, this is an overpowered chassis.

Please keep us informed as to progress.

Thanks for the welcome ,yeah its a 5hp gave it an oil change and new fuel today and fired up straight away doesnt miss a beat . Is there any issues to being overpowered?
Thinking Ill keep an eye out for the 150cc villiers it came with , are these a rare engine to find?

Hi Mick
In this case - NO!

The 13 Series was an engine from the old school - smaller bore; longer stroke.
To my knowledge, the 13 was used on 21" walk-behind up to 26" ride-ons.
With its CI flywheel it produced max torque at a lower RPM than modern designs.

You have the latter engine with dual element air-cleaner, but before electronic ignition.
As I said, a sensible approach.

Cheers
