Gentlemen, do I need to remove and strip the rear roller of my SB45? It is the 3 roller one. Seems to move freely with no grinding etc. I was thinking of just lashing it with WD40 in all the places I could squirt.
If yes. Is there a procedure for doing it, step by step. Resto going along nicely so far.
Thanks Llew

Don't use wd40. It's corrosive. Try lanolin based sprays or light oil. Might also be worthwhile to replace a few bearings.

Probably not if it is as you describe.Check for any movement which may indicate wear on the shaft, bushes or bearings. Not a hard job to overhaul and is the best way to check and clean and get some oil etc between the shaft and bushes.Just make shure you have the pawls pointing in the drive direction if you remove the pawl holders.

Hi Llew,

Following on from what sb30inch has previously written,

IMHO there's not much to do with a rear roller. If it was working well with no issues I'd pretty much leave it alone.

I would check out the main bearings on each side to see if there's any play what so ever and if so I'd replace those as that will create uneven cutting issues, but apart from that just clean the outside and re-install it.

Cheers,
BB.

Thanks guys. Do people paint the roller or leave natural?

Hello Llew, sb30inch and Mod BB

I have a preference here.
The first 45s' rollers were painted in a 'battleship gray' colour.
At some point - in the late 1970s - SB simply painted the rollers with
the same green they used for the frame.

I guess the idea was to make the machine presentable on the showroom floor.
I do not believe, at any time, SB 45 rollers left the factory unpainted.

I like the idea of painting the rollers - because in leaves a nice patina
that may last for years to come.

Hope this helps.

Loving that battle ship grey!!! Mine has green on the sides as well. Whats left of it. Anyway blew roller out, gave a good oil. Cleaned up and undercoated. New bearings ordered. Thanks to all for the help.
