Now that I have a pair of these (thanks Paul) I think I might see if we can organize a bit of Deutcher racing. We can test out the Honda against the Briggs yay Might help put my mates place up at Culgoa in the Mallee back on the map

Hi Paul, that front wheel with the broken out center, ended up a 5 min job, so easy when I really looked at it, cleaned it up moved the broken away holes around a bit, drilled new holes and job done

Does anybody have any knowledge about the strength of the gearboxes in these machines. A mate of mine has a few acres in Pakenham (Vic) and it is on the side of a hill that is fairly steep. He has a rideon that he paid $8000 for and he tried using it on the weekend on one section and it spooked him enough that he won't be trying that again. laugh. The Deutscher being low and flat will be stable enough, I'm just wondering if the gearbox/diff will be able to handle it. Any thoughts? I guess there is only one way to find out laugh

Hi Norm

Deutscher has a solid name for reliability.
They have been - for decades - a popular choice for municipal
councils and contractors.

So ... my answer would have to be that gearboxes are solid.
Any failure should be attributed to a specific cause.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jack, this one is the ride on R360, I just replaced the gearbox housings on it, it isn't a big gearbox, just not sure if it will handle the hilly stuff.. Knowing my mate he will want to put a 20hp motor on it to get up the hills and I can see the gearbox as being the weak point. The beauty of them is they are low, flat and wide, and if you fit a flat ride on seat you can drop your body height by a couple of hundred millimeters, all helps

Hi Norm

Sorry mate - stuffed that up then frown

I guess the issue is how heavy duty is the gearbox, and will
it take more horsepower?

I suspect you're the better judge of that.

I keep looking at these and I have one here that needs a complete new top fitted to the deck, it is completely rusted out. I might be crazy but I keep looking at it and thinking that seeing the top needs replacing, should I go the hog with it and add an extra 18" cutter to each side and then it would have a 72" cut. Would be a great machine for my mates property which is reasonably steep but a fairly big acreage. The fact the Deutscher is low and flat makes it suitable and the extra width would certainly prevent any potential roll over problems. The bigger cutting deck will obviously require a bigger hp motor. Am I crazy?

Paul I did give this idea some serious consideration welding the 2 R36's together but I am not sure how the side by side diffs would work, might have to speed one motor up and slow one down so you could turn it. At least it should get plenty of traction

make it steer from the middle. center steer or each end turns like 4wheel steer

Sorry Paul, not following you on this, center steer using the standard R36 steering is no problem, my problem is what happens with the 2 gearboxes and are you thinking of using the 2 existing motors to drive each gearbox in its standard form. I think it gets far two complicated, building a wider deck seems a lot easier and when you think about it it only brings the deck out the width of a Victa Toecutter on each side. Might be easier to just mount a Toecutter out on each side laugh

rear gear box runs in forward the front runs in reverse, all linked up. The Forw/Rev levers linked up would do the Forw/Rev as normal ( front Diff/Box runs reverse when rear Diff/Box is in forward) The Gear shift levers give drive to both boxes, having adjustment at each linkage connection is to fine tune the engagement points..

Paul, discussing it with Terry Scanlon his concern is the one B section cutter belt might not be up to it so his suggestion is to use the R36 as is and build a tow behind that has 2 cutters spaced apart to give us the 6 foot cutting width we are chasing. This seems a much simpler way to go and Terry says the Deutscher will pull it, no problems at all
