Hi guys,
Picked this mower up as give away from a guy around the corner, thought to myself what I have got to loose. From what I have found out from serial numbers is that it is a Scott Bonnar mower running a Kirby Tecumesh engine. I have found the serial numbers on the rear of the deck which are 45 43211 but I can only find info on the H4-4A but mine is stamped H4-4B. I can also only find images and info on the pull start but the one I have is crank start. Any info would greatly appreciated.

Hello Virus66

A warm welcome to these forums.

No 45s used a crank start.
I think we will need a photo.
If a Kirby, the engine will be a HK25 or HK30

For info on uploading photos: HERE.

The H4-4A and H4-4b is the specification, not the model.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jack,

I have attached some photos. Could the crank be something placed on after? Don't why someone would do that though?

I am all new to these types of mowers and haven't even ever used one but they have always interested me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

G'day Virus66

Well you've come to the right place for help.
The 450407 is listed in the Model sheet for 1974-75.
Mod Bonnar Bloke will ask for some specific photos to ascertain
the transmission and frame condition.

The crank start is referred to as a trip-release wind up.
This one was used extensively on various engines in the 1960s.
It is novel that someone has put it on a horizontal Kirby!

Here is some stuff on the 45 (to read in the meantime)

Hope this helps.

Hi Virus and Mod CJ,

Yes it's amazing what people do to avoid repairing something properly. As Jack has said it's unusual to see a trip release impulse starter fitted on a horizontal engine. It probably works but a bit awkwardly due to the engine being set back from the edge of the chassis frame.

I guess I need to ask the question what are your long term intentions with the mower, this way I can answer your questions appropriately.

Cheers,
BB.

Thanks Jack and BB. I hope restore it but as I strip it down I will look at parts to see what condition it is in. Although i have had a small play with trip release I dont think it is working properly as I think it is slipping but not really sure if I am doing it right in the first place. If I am able to restore it I hope to use it at home and as a specialty service for my own lawn mowing business. Any tips on where to start will be great. If you guys need any photos to help me through the process I would glad to upload what you need
