i am having issues removing the flywheel of this hurricane motor i have been soaking it for days and trying to to tap it of with the assistance of wedges. i really dont want to break this, that is all i seem to do lately. the key looks corroded to the point it looks white. any tips would be great
sounds like its time to make yourself a puller now . or use a deadblow hammer hard plastic type of thing little or no thread damage then too . but a puller seems the go matey then you have one for future use
but you should be able to get the points through the inspection plate im sure ? i always used a good pair of tubeless truck levers does the job for me . then a good sharp hit and off she pops

use hardwood too , pine will just absorb the shock .......... just a thought
And there is a little trick I use with these pullers on especial hard to get off flywheels here. That is tighten down the center puller bolt good and tight and smack that center puller bolt with a 2 lb brass hammer, which loosen the bolt some then just re-tighten bolt. When tapping the bolt just don't get to overly aggressive as you can more damage than good; otherwords, just use plain common sense. It may take a few tries but usually pops the flywheel. Just be ready to catch the flywheel on horizontal crankshafts. This works because of slight play in the puller center bolt which allows it to shock the crankshaft with a slightly higher Ft-lb pull.
You also may need to replace the washers that come with puller with better ones; that is if they anything like the cheap ones that came my Harbor Freight version which bent on the very first try.
Yes as mentioned a puller will do the job.a nice sharp blow after being tightened usually does the trick.there is great temptation to do whatever is necessary to get it off in the heat of the moment without a puller....... But could end up damaging it.
special note there Seanw. these hurricane housings are especially fragile around the centre of the housing, so trying to prize it off is not a good idea as they tend to brake easily .the alloy is unusually thin around the middle section. you really need to make yourself a proper puller.
If my collection is complete ( then how come i keep buying stuff ? ) 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
see this post as the kirby lawson flywheel has similar properties and you can see the thin alloy housing where they are custom to break. unlike the kirby at least with the hurricane it has the 3 bolt holes to affix a puller to. i strongly recommend using these .

Thanks for the Kirby-Lauson flywheel info as I have one to dismantle myself. Valuable and much appreciated information for someone like me. Will get myself a puller.
Just one query (newbie to all this): how do you exert force on the flywheel without bolt holes to attach to?
if you have puller holes use them otherwise i do this. have a look at this .ive tried it a few times and also on my last kirby. it worked so easily. almost no effort and not using a large mallet to pound the shaft seems a lot kinder to my bearings .i did drench the whole thing with innox for a full day before.
Here are some pictures of the stuff that i use on hard to get apart parts and a picture of my home made fly wheel puller , its pretty basic but works a treat ,
The doctor tells me I'm crazy, but the voices tell me I'm not. and i just don't know which one to believe!"
fellas thanks for all the input. i have been soaking it for a few days. and i have stopped hitting it with a hammer. thanks for that input. i have a plan. i will let you know how i get on. does anyone have a spare just incase?? this place is a font of information thanks again sean
"i have a plan" worked i could not get the plate off the villiars to expose the electrical elements(they just sheared straight off). so i tried to take the flywheel off with a 1/2 inch rattle gun. no go. i had to use a 3/4 inch rattle gun (with the biggest fella in the room pushing down on it)??? it came off with help from a couple of screwdrivers. the flywheel on the amplion was easy to remove (after i found the right tool for the job!) harmonic balance puller. the points on the amp were not opening up at all. have set point gap. the villagers points i had to remove with long nose pliers so they are cactus. any ideas of a similar set of points i could use. thank you for your interest sean
