as far as i know ( maybe wrong ) masport never used a honda engine , the base is late 70's early 80's though and tough as nails !
so you have the best of both worlds now , . up the rear of base near the chute i think is some numbers , they tell you the year . too easy to id really mate . if the wheels are good to go then just use the a%#e off of it as they are not worth much to most people , i never knew why though .. maybe i have a masport fetish
Yep, mid 70's base, I would say, and has had an engine upgrade. Originally would have had a Briggs or an Iron Horse 2-stroke on it. This one would have originally had a steel catcher, like this 1972 2-stroke engined version:

Contrast that with the 1978 plastic catcher Series 8 04 - no permanently attached windrower:

A pic from an old ODK thread showing the steel catcher:
The bar blade is original. Those caused quite a few bent crankshafts when Masport introduced them to the Oz market in the mid-70's, after Masport took over Whirlwind.

oops , oh yeah . like this one . also a bar blade or was once the all silver jobby i think might be the same , green one WAS a whirlwind but a techumsie thing soooo was a hard starter n smokey , so a later steel based masport P.O.S donated its heart and wheels and yes , it is supposed to be hammered silver , this one has since been painted , its a president
Thanks guys for the info. I did think the Honda looked a bit incongruous on it and thought the base was at least back to the 70's simply by the design/fashion and the badging (or lack thereof).
Maybe a rescue mission in the morning! There was no catcher with it but I'll have a look.
Vccomm, please understand I'm so wet behind the ears at this that you'd take a shower if you stood there! So I didn't see the numbers nor may I have known what they mean.
If I get this one I may have to revise my not-starting-a-collection plan 'cos if I get a few others I know about I'd have quite an eclectic collection. Perhaps not the purist's choice, but my choice...and that's probably what matters (at least to me)
still wet here too behind the ears mate lol . and a collection IS whatever you like it too be we all gotta learn sometime though . and older masports are mostly a good tough machine that a lot of the newer bit n pieces will fit onto .
no one really plans on a colletion i think hahaha it just uuuuuum happens like it did here with my jiggers . got up one morning and thar they just was !!!! i didnt worry but seems the minister did . now all sorts of different machines . good luck there though
