Hello ODK History Lovers

There is little known about PEL hand mowers, and even less about the makers,
Production Engineering Limited (PEL) of 324 Botany Road, Alexandria, in
Sydneys inner-east.

Lawnmowers were probably just one product from this company but nothing is certain.
The earliest record I have dates from 1934 so that is where I have dated the first
mowers to. I have no accurate dating.

I have some evidence that PEL made just one model in at least two sizes 12 inch and
15 inch. The photographic evidence reveals this was a most conventional design.

It would appear that the company was almost immediately in financial difficulties.
The two records below tell a sad tale. The company was liquidated and wound up in 1939.
Of particular note is the name of the Sole Director, James Thomas Hedges. A Hedges
is said to have designed the Presto lawnmower discussed HERE.

I can find no advertisements for the Pel from the 1930s, suggesting few of
these mowers were sold. The odd thing is that I have found two references to
Pel mowers, both dating from 1949. The good thing is that I do have some
photos of a Pel lawnmower from a 2015 auction.

TO BE CONTINUED
