I was going to transplant this engine (reluctantly) when I became curious about the is numbers, which seem to indicate that the date of manufacture was 1967? Is this correct? Because if true I would consider that this little feller be worth keeping in tact. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2016/02/full-6859-27184-2016_02_24_12.08.50.jpg) serial numbers are: 92902 0210 05 6706202

Hi Christo
Well, no. Those numbers cannot match what we're looking at. Is it possible the Code is 8706202 ?
Hope this helps. ------------------------ Jack

took two pics. Looks like a six. Thanks for your reply Jack. It seems to me that there is not much recored on the beautiful Rovers. Am I right? I have come accross so many models but never find a lot of info. E&OE. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2016/02/full-6859-27192-2016_02_24_18.29.18.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2016/02/full-6859-27193-2016_02_24_18.34.47.jpg)

That doesn't quite mesh, somehow. Assuming that's an accurate read of the numbers - Briggs stampings can leave a bit to be desired at times. A rub over with chalk, then wiping off excess, can help to highlight them.
That 'Combat 45' isn't a 1960's model - see the 1960's Rover brochures in the History Section. I'd be inclined to say 80's or later, most likely.
And for '80s vertical shaft engines, the numbers were usually stamped on the cowling above the spark plug.
I would suggest that that cowling is very likely to be from an older horizontal-shaft Briggs, given the number position and starter orientation. Therefore, non-original to the engine. And it's obviously been repainted to match the engine. Edit: Found that the Model number is correct for vertical shaft, when I checked up.
Any idea which type of ignition it has? Electronic = 1982 or later, for sure.

Thats odd Christo, from what i have been told they didn't start making rovers red until about 1983-1984.

Enlarged the image here and reading of the numbers is correct. Some research would need to be done comparing components as that cover could be from an older engine as suggested or the engine is a transplant for one that failed.

Yes You all make sense. I should have realized it, that it was a bitsa. Maybe I was just wanting it to be true. LOL. Thanks for your help.

Hi Christo and all Contributors
Well, never stop believing.
This is a timely reminder that many lawnmowers will have had significant modification in their life. This is a helpful post Christo.
For me, the issue was never that it was a bitsa; but whether the cowl or the whole engine was replaced at some point.
Points of note:- - Rover Red was introduced in stages from 1983 (as Kye said). - The base is of 1980s or 1990s vintage (as Gadge said). - Rover never offered a domestic mower that required recoil starting from the front of the machine.
Points of Regret:- I do not have enough knowledge to know whether that cowl belongs to that engine. I do not believe Rover were using 9 Series Briggs engines in the 1960s. Rover recoil rewinds were used on 10 Series (and above) in the 1960s.
So AVB has precisely summarised the bottom line.
