Hi there

I am in the process of re-building a Greenfield Tractor 8 that I have inherited. it was chewing oil, blowing smoke, and would only run for a couple of minutes before the spark plug would give up from being covered in gunk.
it has B&S engine 191702 2144-01 83062410

I have replaced the rings, and tapped the valves along with new gaskets and seals.

I am just in the process of putting it back together, however i cannot for the life of me find the throttle link and spring. I think they may be lost.
I have looked online, and it looks like I can easily replace the spring (P/N 261911), however the link seems to be an issue (P/N 261611). It looks like the only option is to ship it from the US at nearly $70 (FOR A PIECE OF WIRE! :o)
Does anyone have any other ideas for the linkage? Can they be made from a piece of wire?

There is another part P/N (260971) which appears to be for the models pre 1982 (pre 82121010) , that is available in Australia, would that be close enough?

Firstly welcome. I reckon your looking in the wrong place mate. I got an entire carby rebuild kit from the states a while back and freight was no where near that. I was able to get all the parts to rebuild it for around half what I could get it here in Australia this was before I found this site so be sure to check here. If not, for that kind of money I'd be looking for a donor engine with the correct linkages. Finally yes, if you know what it looks like you should be able to knock one up from a piece of wire and a pair of pliers quite easily

I have checked on this site, and they dont stock it unfortunately. If you could point me in the direction of a US parts supplier that doesnt charge an arm and a leg for postage, I would appreciate it

I reckon your likely to scratch one up here from one of the lads, failing that I spent a bit of time on an American forum where Jacks small engines was one of the "go to" places. That's where I got my bits. Our local mower places in my area had no idea and no interest in my toys because they were too old. If it was me I'd spend an afternoon with a few beers and google up a pic. Head to the shed with a piece of wire 1.6mm at a guess and a pair of pliers. If you can't find 1.6 wire head to a welding supplies and get a length of stainless filler wire for tig welding It will be a meter long and about $1.

That 261611 is way over priced in my opinion too. Here my cost with my discount is rather high for a piece of wire. The Briggs list price is 20.25 USD without shipping cost $7-$10 shipping if I was to order only it and that with delivery within the US.

If you can find wire of the correct diameter you should be able to make one but it will take some carefully measurements and making a couple of Z bends at the ends.

Possibly, but it would be a little difficult to get it right, without an original to duplicate. It's not a complex part - nearly straight, with z-bends at either end.
The critical bit is the length between the z-bends, and their orientation. The wire is nothing special - mild steel will be fine. You may have to make up a few lengths, to try them out. There is some leeway in the setup, in the form of adjusting the governor lever on its shaft.

Not extremely likely. But if it's cheap enough, it might be worth trying. From the IPL [ http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/Z6nlxBVJ1DajI.pdf ], it seems that the throttle control plate [part 222] changed on that date. But the throttle shaft and governor lever did not, so the reason for the link change isn't clear. It might be as simple as a slight bend added, for clearance.

If you run a search on FleaBay Oz, using 'briggs 261911', a couple come up ex the US which would land here for around $35. As AVB says, the Briggs price is a bit outrageous!
The pics are worth a look at any rate, if you are going to try making one up. Look for 'briggs 260971' as well, and compare the pics - they are very similar.

Just wanted to give an update.
I ended up tracking this part down, in a Briggs and Stratton dealer, only 10km's from where I live, and it only cost $16.

It was a crazy little place in Toowoomba, that looks like it hasnt changed since the 70's, no computers or calculators, everything logged in books and files, but they knew exactly what I was after and had a couple to spare.

If anyone ever has trouble tracking down a Briggs part, I can let you know the number for these people

Sounds like a great little shop for the odd and unusual NOS parts great to have nearby. I confused a local bloke asking for blades for my 70's Victa utility.
