I'd like to paint the barrel on an old full crank. Does anyone have suggestions on how to clean up an old weathered barrel without disassembling the engine?
Thanks in advance

Slash, bit time consuming but remove the carb and exhaust and plug the holes with a piece of rag in each port. Make sure the piston is covering both ports. Small paint brush and a scraper/knife and sit down and work your way around the barrel, scraping and scratching, time consuming but about the only way. When you think you have it all clean, give it a final brush down with plenty of kero on the brush and then hose it down with your finger on the hose to get a decent jet. Make sure the rags remain in place. After hosing down remove the rags and give a squirt of WD40 in both ports and sit the motor in the sun to dry. Once dry you can mask around the head and the cases then spray the barrel

Thanks Norm. I was thinking much the same but as my mind wanders I started thinking about blocking ports with rag and silicone sealing then media blasting or wire brushing to get rid of all rust. Could always use hydrochloric acid to remove rust but the vapours would surely etch into the aluminium. My Mrs says I overthink things sometimes.

Without complicating the issue you will get a pretty good finish the way I described it, clean the cases and head the same way, lick of silver paint and they look a million dollars.

If you have the facilities to media blast it, I'd just pull the barrel and head off, and do it. That allows you to be certain you've gotten rid of any residual media particles, when you do the post-blast clean. Much quicker.

After all, doing that would only cost you a barrel gasket set, and those are cheap.

Thanks Gentlemen. Nothing sh!ts me more than doing a job and having it fail because you only went to 90% and not the whole nine yards. If I'm going to the effort I want my paint to stick and not to score the bore in prep. Just a simple paint job not an engine rebuild. Without going to too much trouble I might plug the in/outlets and wire wheel the barrel and see if it looks paint worthy. I'm thinking ahead I just want the bastard to run at the mount................
