I have seen some discussion regarding the virtues of the full crank engine. What are the advantages of full crank vs half crank in respect to lawn mowers?

The thing is that the full crank engines are the older engines. From the early 50's to the 90's where the powertorque engine took over. The powertorque is not a full crank engine. So me personally I do prefer full crank engines. Mainly I guess the quality control was I lot higher back in those days. As far as advantages I'm not real sure as I don't have a lot to do with powertorque engines unless I'm fixing to sell or maintaining my mower. I prefer full cranks but I guess that's just due to that is the era that I'm collecting.

I had heard that the full crank allowed for better balance and allowed a higher RPM, haven't had much experience with them except to say that I didn't notice much of a difference between them and a half-crank engine.

I like the power of the powertorque engines the aussie made ones that is.. But think the old full crank last longer thats for sure they are a better designed engine as far as the crank goes anyway..I think it just comes down to its cheaper to make the powertorque engines and thats why Victa ran with them just my 2c ..I like both engines...

Hi guys, I think all your observations are all correct here...In (my opinion) I think that full crank engine...(ie.) a bearing at each end of the crank, is a better method for longevity of the engine...better balance and is more stable at the end of the torque curve than the PowerTorque...but this is just supposition on my part....I have not seen the figures of the half-crank against the full-crank Victa humming in full song.... wink

Is there figures on the different's in power and torque? If so I'd love to see the different's between the two.

Compare the different mower sounds in these YouTube videos...

Cool is that my video?
There will be a difference in the way they sound, they are completely different engines. It's like the differance between Ford and Holden.
Although in saying that I do think that the old full crank engines just seem to sound stronger and not as loose as a power-torque,but I surpose that comes back to quality control again. The newer engines really do have to go through the same testing as the older engines.

The 'full-crank' purrs along while the 'power-torque' just screams.

My 'full-crank' runs best on half throttle.

I have 2 Utilities which I use in rotation and have done so for the last few years, One a Full crank and the other a PowerTorque.
The Full crank leaves the powertoque for dead.
It starts easier, has more power and is smoother.
I'm not an amateur, I have 20-30 mowers at any one time and have swapped out motors on the same chassis to see the difference and even swapped carby combinations.
All this being equal. A good fullcrank will leave a powertorque for dead.
Torque is what makes a mower engine good so low to mid power, where the older motor shines is paramount. The powertorque has more vibration, particularly at high revs and doesn't have the same throttle response.
After all this the powertorque is incredibly reliable, easy to repair and cheap to maintain. I love my powertorque engines and given a choice only my Honda is a better choice from currently available engines. (though it seems that the 2T motors are no longer available)
My weapon of choice is still my Full crank Utility when it's has to be done.
I do think some of the new Chonddas can work but need to be setup properly and given a few hundred more revs.

Quality is a direct experience, independent of and prior to intellectual abstractions.
