Hi everyone, i have a 12hp briggs and Stratton engine model no 281707 type 018401 code 88030111 and the carby a new shaft kit . Are they still available or what is my best option ? thankyou.

If your referring to throttle and choke shafts for the large one piece Flo-jet yes they are still available but not kit form or at least they are here in the US. You would need one or more of the following:

491006 Throttle Shaft
692279 Throttle Shaft Seal (2 each needed)
222433 Valve Throttle
691437 Screw

390684 Choke Shaft
222010 Valve Choke
691437 Screw

394698 Carburetor Overhaul Kit

491031 Carburetor Assembly (Replacement Carburetor)

Valves sometime referred to as butterflies and the screws may be reused if in good condition.

I suggest that you try the search box at the top of the forum for the parts. Just place the number into the search box and click the search icon. It will show if the parts are listed on the online store which is in Australia. I have checked most of the parts and they are listed on the site.

If they don't come up then send the online store an email and ask them to chase up the parts.

It's from the Briggs and Stratton website and has the Illustrated Parts List and Operators Manual for your specific engine model series available for download.

I use the B&S Website regularly when looking for information on their engines. As long as you have the Engine Model and Type, and it's recorded, then all is good.

That IPL (Illustrated Parts List) will have the carburetor exploded view on page 3 lower left hand corner. Just look-up the referenced numbers in back (near end of the PDF) for reference number to part number/descriptions. Note: Some of part numbers in that are in imaged PDF may have been superseded since it was published.

AVB has listed the individual parts needed by carby section; but if you don't get 'P/No 394698 Carburetor Overhaul Kit', you'll need to buy a '221997 Plug, Welch', as removing the old plug will damage it.

The choke shaft is likely to be OK, but it has to come out in the process of removing the venturi and then the throttle valve and shaft.

You can work out which bits are in the kit from the IPL - they have a 'bullet' [�] symbol against the part numbers.

Just a caution here; if there is significant wear in the throttle shaft bores in the carby body, it's not repairable with factory parts.

Briggs have never supplied replacement throttle shaft bushings for the one-piece Flo-Jet carbies, AFAIK. In fact I don't recall if those ones even have bushes, like the older 2-piece Flo-Jets did.

But you will have to pull the throttle shaft to see where the major wear is.

Restorations of antiques can be a problem in this area if you don't have or know someone has the needed machining tools. That when our skills as machinist can come play as boring, installing a shop made bushing, and then reaming so the shafts fit. The main trick is keep the initial boring centered as most times the wear is going to be lopsided.

Sometimes you get lucky and a ready made bushing works with only a slight re-sizing; just depends shaft sizes and carburetor casting.

Thanks guys I have just received 3 second hand carby's for nothing and one has no wear in the shafts or housing so I will now dismantle the original one and see what damage is to the housing and other parts Thanks again guys you have excelled with help and information -jacko4

Hi guy's again, just got the greenfield going and seems ok but the carby could do with a new needle and seat can you tell me how to remove the seat as it looks like someone has tried to remove it with a screwdriver and it is not round thankyou jacko4.

Is it the press in type or screw in type?

If is the screw in type and notches are not completely destroyed a hollow ground flat blade screwdriver that reaches edge to edge may still be able to remove it. Novices are that don't know it usually use regular flat blade on attempted removals and it simply climbs out of the brass seat notches.
