Hi everyone
I have acquired a Scott Bonner mower that is 20 inch cut 2.5hp Briggs and Straten engine engine .
It seems to be an early one but can anyone tell me how to find out its age and value please.
It seems to be all original
cheers

Hello ozzie10

I think we responded to this:-
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=71006#Post71006

A warm welcome to the forums ozzie10.
If you would like comment on your machine - as to dating, etc.,
then we need more information. A photo here may tell a thousand
words (hopefully not that much).

As to value, that will depend on condition.
A historic search on an auction site should give you an idea.

For information on uploading photos click HERE.

Hope this helps.

Hi ozzie10,
The mower in picture looks like a Scott bonnar 690 series mower but this mower did not come out with a 20 inch reel, but rather a 24 inch reel. Also, the 690 did not come out with the handle bars in the picture and the side pannel that covers the gears did not have a circle extruding it. Additionally, the 690 series mower had a different style blade to the one that it is currently fitted on the mower. Lastly, the 690 was red mower not green and white. Your mower could be Alroh or something completely different.

I think your engine is a February 1972 build, definitely not a Scott Bonnar. Being in New Zealand it could be a Masport ? I will do a little research unless CyberJack sees it first.

Hello All Contributors

That's quite right, the SB-Morrisons of the 1970s came in 16" & 24" sizes.
The reason the 20" SB-Morrison was not offered here is because SB had their
own Model 45 20". The 16" SB-Morrison replaced the dropped 14" Model 45.
They had a single point height adjuster and a different handle design.

The cross-handle, clutch flywheel, and lack of a single point height
adjuster all helps to identify this mower. It is from the 1960s or
early 1970s (as the engine Code suggests).

The cross handle was used on Ransomes (the designer),and copied on
early Morrison Olympics, and then Victa Imperials and Turner-Morrisons.

This is not a Ransomes Marquis however, because of the lack of height
adjuster,and the different clutch flywheel.

I believe this machine to be either a Morrison, or a Turner-Morrison,
(essentially a Morrison). The ten-blade reel is either a factory option or
a replacement. I believe the chaincase has been repaired.

If the engine is original, then I favour Morrison, rather
than the Turner (because Turner offered just Kirby engines, I think).

A close-up photo of the RH side frame may offer a clue as to which one.
A maker's plate should still be there, but painted over (or removed).

Hope this helps.

Nice work Jack, when I was trawling the net for a match I saw a Ransomes with the cross over bars.

Hi Paul

Yes, one of the greatest handle designs in mower history,
because it allowed quick turning and maneuvering. Ransomes
had this design from the fourties!

The Scott Bonnar 45 would interpret the design in its greatest
iteration (in my view). Pram handles are for babies grin

On this machine, I am not convinced the cowling date is correct: 72020...
I would like to see a photo of the RH side frame (for evidence of plate
or decal); and a photo of the inside of the chaincase cover (to see
evidence of a repair).

In any case, best guess, A Morrison, by any name.

Cheers

Hello ozzie10

Yes, my professional opinion is that the mower in the top
photo is very similar to the one in the bottom photo ...

It's a pity the maker's plate has been removed by a previous
tenant. This is highly irregular ... And it robs the mower
of an identity.

I'm happy in saying this is a Morrison, manufactured in
Hastings, NZ. I note your location is ... NZ. I remain skeptical of the
incomplete engine code. I feel this machine dates from the 1960s, rather
than seventies. But maybe not.

It has a professional reel, so maybe it once belonged to a bowling
club. Maybe. Value in current form? Very little.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ozzie10

How are you starting it ? It looks to be missing the cooling cowl and recoil starter assembly ?

Hello BB

Not quite. The Imperial never had a manufacturer's plate.
The holes are legacy holes from the Morrison factory.

Imperials were 'built-up' from Morrison componentry.
Victa added their distinctive engine, handles and fuel tank.

Cheers
