Looking in the victa green book the closest match I can see is a victa cortina 4 1964-66, the base is also similar to the corvette 4 from 1963 - 64 but has the wrong cowling for that.

Hello IRB and Joe

I think Joe is pretty close, but there is a devil here - in the detail.
The model 16 on the engine plate is a Victa reference, not a Kirby one.

The general trend I have observed in 1960s Victas at the first tier is this:
the 160 Corvette was the flagship; the 125 Cortina the first option below this.
Whenever the Corvette's base was updated, the Cortina would receive the
older Corvette base.

So, is this a Corvette 4 from 63-64 (V21), or a Cortina 4 from 64-66?
Joe has identified the cowling as the critical issue. I totally agree.
The corvette was up-speced to have better badging and chrome - to differentiate
it on the showroom floor.

Here is the Model 16 4-stroke in Cortina and Corvette configurations.
Note that the Cortina does not have the front name plate, or the
dress piece round the trip-release impulse starter.

IRB, I note that your first photo appears to show lugs on the front
of the cowl - suggesting it originally had a name plate.
Could you confirm that, please?

I can only conclude that this machine is a V21 Corvette 4 from
the 1964 Victa range (1963-64).

I hope that is a fair dating assessment.

Hello IRB73

That's great evidence! Joe was almost spot-on with the issue.
This is, in my view, a Corvette 4 from 63-64.

The Corvette nameplate has been removed and lost.
The Cortina inherited this base in 64-66 for a simple reason:
the Corvette base was changed to the newer style.

The engine nameplate was most helpful here, and shows how accommodating
Kirbys were in meeting customer requests - Model 16 for Victa; VK30
for Kirby (V = vertical; K = Kirby)

This is a Kirby VK30 - a great little motor, and the most popular
4-stroke domestic rotary engine of the 1960s.

Victa entered the 4-stroke market in 1960 - with their "4-stroke"
and then their "Four Star" on the Sheerline base. Had Victa not
done that, they would have lost serious market ground.

Your machine has the original Corvette base, and one well-worth
saving. Catcher, edging guard, and nameplate needed ... smile

Cheers

I should be able to provide you with a wheel and cap in excellent condition, I just need to make sure I have one first, but there are 300+ old mowers out the back and in my storage sheds, yours for the cost of post and a beer or two. (90%certain I have a full set of those wheels that came in on a series 80 mower by chance one)
