Hi all. I have a Greenfield Evo E III 32 Mk2 . I need a replacement engine for a B&S 13 HP east west type. My dealer tells me that it is near impossible to source any engine that would fit. Apparentl;y the NorthSouth engines are not a problem. Has anyone put a new motor in my mower type that fitted.

hi Chas, the problem of engine replacement on the older mowers is usually space....yours would be fitted with a smallish side valve motor which B&S dont make anymore, the new engines are OHV, and are much bigger in the head area, which makes for issues on fitting. You may be better getting yours reco'd, they where generally a better engine in the first place.

Bummer Not too fussed if the hood doen't fit as I could easily modify the old one. Must check dimensions on new models - cant imagine they are that much different.

It had a smaller engine 11 or 13hp in it (no idea if E/W or N/S) and apparently the previous owner after 12mths upgraded it for a B&S Vanguard 20hp V twin N/S. HTH

Yeah thanks Buckets. Mine is actually a 32" but probably same engine. The problem it seems is that B&S no longer make the east west engine. Back when that guy made the swap it was probably available.

Not sure if we are on the same page or not. Are you thinking of putting a North/South engine in to replace the East/West that they don't make any more?. The replacement engine in mine is a North/South. Is your mower similar to this except for the 32" deck (see atch) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2015/10/full-8388-24682-p1220455_1.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2015/10/full-8388-24683-p1020161_1.jpg)

h Buckets . Yeah I understand. I do want to fit a north south engine if possible. The query I have is will a north south fit in my opening. The dealer says difficult if not impossible. I need to get some actual dimensions on a replacement engine to ensure it will fit and will endeavour to get some from the sales people.. Apparently the opening for the east west series was not a big as for the north south. If it was not too much trouble could you measure the length from just in front of the fuel tank to the front of the engine bay. I will measure mine and if the length is the same then I should be able to make it fit. I'm just put off a bit by the dealers attitude. Also the actual height of the engine. I'm not too fussed if I have to alter the engine cover - could always leave it off altogether if it came to that

Will get back to you with some measurements.
Does your machine appear to be the same as mine?
Can you post a picture of your machine?

Note: Some engines have the air filter on top of the motor, which would increase the height. L:430mm - H:320mm - W1:210mm - W2:390mm ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2015/10/full-8388-24698-p1020162_1.jpg)

hey Chas, just to clarify the east/ west, north/ south thing, it's got nothing to do with the engine it's self but the way it's mounted to the mower, buckets twin is mounted what is called north/ south, the head facing the front, and if it was east/ west it would be mounted sideways, the head to the right usually. Greenfield only did this on a model or two in an attempt to make the mower a bit shorter. as i mentioned before, the old side valve motors arn't being made anymore and the new OHV ones are bigger in size, so can course problems with space, you would have to sit a potential replacement motor on your mower to see if it fitted.

![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2015/10/full-9652-24729-20151018_104840.jpg) Ok so I've measured my engine . Sorry about the pic quality. Comparing measurments to those of Buckets in his photo: His measurments in brackets) Width 390 mm (390 mm) same width along length Height 300mm ( 320 mm) Length 360 - 400mm max ( 430 mm) So my problem will be that if I could source the same motor as Buckles it would not fit lengthwise. I will await measurements from the sellers. I suspect also I will need to know that I can fit the motor so the shaft is in the same position or I will end up with problems of belt length. Will keep you posted. Thanks guys for your help so far.

Chas2, Can you post a picture (like my first one) so that we can compare the machines, that way I can see if we are comparing apples with apples.
Because if the mower is the same model/size as mine, (32" v 34" deck should not matter) then it seems logical to me to believe that, the larger north/south engine in my mower would fit comfortably in yours.
The only other problem I can think of, is if the engine mounting brackets for east/west engines are different to the north/south ones.

Hi Buckets will do that tomorrow if I get time. Thanks. I can say though that your engine at 430mm long would not fit in my engine bay for sure, but I could adapt the bay I think.

Just a thought Chas2, I emailed Greenfield and asked them if they had a pdf copy of the owners manual I could purchase. Make sure you give all the details re your mower including the engine Model - Type - Code numbers, they should be on a plate attached to your engine. They emailed me a copy for FREE the same day, here is a link to their contact page: http://www.greenfield.com.au/contact.htmlHint: to send the message you have to drag the stamp on the right over to the "Put Stamp Here"(took me ages to work it out). Maybe also ask them the question re will/what North/South engine will fit this mower.

Chas2, was cleaning my mower this morning and noticed a number stamped on the chassis near the forward/reverse pedal, see attached pic for location you may need to clean around the area to find it. Not positive, but I have a feeling part of the number (mine 2BV-150595) could be the build date. Yours looks pretty much the same as mine, but as you say an earlier model probably 2-3yrs older. Will be interesting to get feedback from Greenfield.

Hi Buckets sorry for not replying sooner. Have looked for that number and it not appear on mine. I am hoping to talk to a couple of handy repairers tomorrow as ot whether they have ever replaced a motor on one like mine and what they might charge to do so.

No luck so far - I havent had much time - have to pull the old engine out to check some measurements on exactly where the shaft is in relation to the bolt holes to ensure another engine can fit. May have to drill new mounting holes in the chassis but thats no problem. Just have to have the shaft in the same position so the belts still fit, otherwise I will have a major problem.

shaft to holes relationship is no problem Chas, all motors patterns are the same. you just need to find a good motor.

Hi Squizzy I understand what you mean, and I will try and get back with the measurements. The problem seems to be that with an East West mount where the shaft goes through the chassis it is not central on the chassis. I need to get the engine out so I cam measure this properly. I do not expect a North South motor mounts to match up with the holes I have seeing as the holes are laid out more as a trapezoid than a square. Probably not explaining myself very well

Chas, your right about the offset hole in the chassis for the shaft, thats only because that's the way the engine has been fitted on your model Greenfield. the engine mount holes will still be same in relationship, it's a standard size thing. all it means is that any engine will bolt to your chassis in the same position, ie, east/ west. you would only have to redrill the chassis if you wanted to mount it north / south, which most likely wont fit because the reason Greenfield turned the motor sideways to make them more compact. so there wont be enough room. and.....it would centralise the shaft, which that model is not set up for. just find a good engine and mount it the same way as yours is now, easy!

Really interested to know how you got on. I am getting the same mower as yours for free. Evo III 13-32 DELUXE. The 13HP is blown and want to get one the same or upgrade to more powerful engine. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Hershwon, Sorry to report I have got no further since last post. I have taken motor out and can see that mounting a motor east west as is is the only option. This is because the whole drive assembly is offset to the left and that is where the pulley on the motor needs to be. Mounting north south in that instance wont work, and a secondary problem is that the cowling would not fit again. If I mount a new motor east west problem is that the top of the motor ( spark plug end) would be wider than the current chasis - only an inch maybe but such that the motor would prevent the foot pedal from working. So I need to move the foot pdeal out further by that much. Nothing impossible but will take time which I dont have any of at the moment. Wil post again but wont be a few weeks at least.
