Hello to all ODK members,also to Mods,not sure if I have put this in the right topic,please move if I haven't.Sorry if it is in the wrong spot.
OK as we all know this is a place to help and learn from others,and once again it is time for me to learn.After doing some work to my Scott Bonnar model 49 I have found that there is rust inside the fuel tank.Now this being a Kirby 2 stroke (not being the easiest engines to find)I don't want to run the risk of sending rust through the engine.So I need to find a way to remove and or stop the rust from continuing to form inside the tank.Now I can't pull the tank apart (wished I could) as I'd never get it back together again.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem I'm having?

Mate I think I may have the answer. Had a tank on an 18 fully rusted inside. one hand full of blue metal inside. a good 3 mins shaking the hell out of it. empty out then put the blue metal back in, minus rust, repeat 3 or 4 times. clean out well with straight fuel a couple of times then whack some 2stroke fuel in it with a new tap and filter and you are away. have used this process about 5 times the more you shake the better.

Hi Blumbly,

I have used Apple Cider Vinegar to clean out a rusty fuel tank and it works. Buy it from Coles or Woolies, soak for a day and empty it out and have a look. You can judge how long to leave it in for. The fuel tank on my stationary engine was well rusted and it did a great job. After the vinegar treatment you can use the gravel, it's good for getting rid of some loose bits.

I had the same drama and Googled looking for help and a lot of people have had success with the vinegar, normal vinegar works but not as well. Good luck.

Thanks guys something to try. Sean not sure if putting stones in it would be a great idea. Not sure I'd be able to get it all out. I'll post some pics this arvo when I get home so you can see why my concern with that.

Here is the pictures of the tank.The tank is the whole dress cowl and the fuel runs right round to the front of the cowl/tank.So I guess putting anything other than liquid would be very very hard to get back out.

but the tank is clearly of Villiers make.
Could you confirm this is correct.

Oh bugger yes you are right it is the Viliers 2 stroke what was I thinking. Can that be changed at all?
