I'm sure I'm not the only one getting this warning, but it happens just about every time I go to add to any topic. In fact it is a rare occasion that I can post without getting this warning.Does any one know why it's happening? Or is this an attempt to make people stop posting as it is working as I don't want to wait 6 minutes between posts.

My assumption is that it is made that way to stop spammers.

A tad frustrating when you want to reply to two threads but gives you time to think about your response before posting it.

No I don't think it is for that.It never happened before. At some point a few years ago Bruce had the site swapped over to another service and or server and ever since that change it has continued to happen.Only much much worse now,but I get the feeling that the powers that be aren't worried as there log in would be different and it wouldn't affect them.So it goes left un-fixed.Just my view,I could be wrong.
After the change over there was some work to try and stop it,but it is getting worse,or perhaps it is just directed at me.I don't know.

Hi Blumbly

It's a mystery to me.
I guess it's done for the reason IHWS has said.
We do have problems with spammers from time to time.

Hope this helps.

What?? Is there an echo in here?
I really don't think so.As I said it didn't do this before the change.I log on with the same IP address every time and it doesn't happen with every thread just some, but it is getting to more and more topics.
Jumping to conclusions doesn't fix the problem it just tucks it away under the carpet and the problems doesn't go away.If you took your car to a mechanic with it having a defiant miss fire and he came up with silly 'it could be this or that' and didn't fix the problem.Would you be happy with that and keep driving it? No you wouldn't you'd get it fixed. I'm sure I can't be the only one who get this problem.Or am I?
So as far as an anti-spam device I really don't think so.I just want someone to find and fix the problem not come up with if's and butts. That's why I started this topic.

I'm not jumping to conclusions at all.
So far, no one else has said they have this problem, either in the forums
or in PMs to moderators in the years following the 'server change'.

So, Blumbly, let's work through this.
- Does the problem go away after 360 seconds?
- Can you then post another topic or response?

What change are you referring to?

[If its the 'server change' a few years' ago, then this problem
should have shown up with more members than yourself.]

I'm happy to work through this issue with you.

Hope this helps.

Yes it Does happen...

Mines has been doing this on and off for a while. I just wait and send the next post, It really doesnt bother me, so wasn't worth me complaining about.

I was only ever concerned about my login issues.

Hello Mal

Could you be more specific.
The posting issue goes away after 360 seconds ...as intended, then?

I have had personal experience with spammers.
Had the 360 seconds not been there it would have been more difficult
to deal with. Most members are sympathetic to ODK trying to do the
right thing here. If it is inconvenient, sorry.

We just need accurate information of the problem, and that it
is conveyed in good-will that we wont to fix technical issues.

Hope this helps.

Ive never timed it... but Yes, It always goes through when I try a few mins later...

I think it does serve a purpose, not a tech issue.

If I were to give a time it happens most, then it would be when I make multiple posts quickly.

Hi Mal

Thanks for that. I hope it's not a technical issue with us.
The reality is that ODK is run by widely-used forum software.

We rely on numerous parties - operating systems, browsers, 3rd-party scripting,
and the like. It is in no one's interest to have user-experience issues.

We can only do our best here.

Yes it does come back after 360 seconds which in my book is 6 minutes which is how long it takes. Now I have a busy life at the moment and if I had to do a heap of post and have to wait 6 minutes each time.Really!! That's time I could better use elsewhere.Like I don't know...say.....fixing a mower.
So that's why I don't post a lot.I mean if I had 10 posts I wanted to do,there's a hour just in waiting time,I've got better things to do than sit at a computer and wait.I do do much else on my computer.
Can you see why it's giving me to poops?
I even had to wait 6 minutes to put this post up!!!!AARRHH!!!!!!

Hello Blumbly.

Thank you for clarifying the issue by answering my questions.
So, the site software works as intended. Clearly, it is not an
issue for the vast majority of members. Nonetheless, you have
expressed your view and you are welcome to do so.

The 360 second restriction is obviously there for a purpose.
I personally have had to deal with spammers about half-a-dozen
times this year, and it has taken my time to deal with it.
More damage could have been done without this posting delay.

I certainly can't help you or accommodate your busy lifestyle,
and I understand members could be, potentially, missing out on
your postings.

I will certainly pass on your personal issues with the site to
the site owner, Bruce, and Administrator, Deejay.

Hope this helps.

p.s. I have moved your topic into this forum as it better
reflects the subject matter.

Hi to All,
The 360 second post feature is a component of UBB Threads software and was put in place on this forum by Bruce some years ago to discourage spammers from repetitive posts and also members of this forum posting just one word or one line replies, for the purpose of increasing their forum post count.

The purpose of the forum is to help our members with good, clear and concise answers to their questions and impart knowledge to our members when asked.
Our forum FAQ on the Rules of Conduct states: To maintain a high quality content, discussion moderators may remove messages which stray from the topic or do not contribute new ideas to the discussion.

Our site owner Bruce has now removed the 360 second feature, but has advised it can quickly be put back again if the system is being abused. It quality of posts that is wanted, not quantity. wink

Hoping that explains the issue, and that we have no problems in future.... grin

Please do not PM me asking for support. Please post your questions in the appropriate forums, as the replies it may receive may help all members, not just the individual member.
Kindest Regards, Darryl grin

I and I know other members thank you and Bruce for dealing with this issue as it was happening more and more.It really was starting to become a major dislike and a hassle.
Thank you gentlemen.

First let me say thank-you to the administrators, moderators, et al for their diligence and work. I know from experience that this work can seem a thankless and unappreciated task especially if you seem to be pleasing nobody. Please know that it is appreciated. Thank-you!

I also have received the 360sec warning previously- I was surprised as I am a slow poster, sometimes taking several hours to compose a post. I received it trying to do a couple of quick updates to a couple of threads.

Whilst removal of the delay will speed things up, the prevention of spam is a worthy cause. A bit more contentious, but perhaps OK too (from *my* point of view) is the discouragement of the "me too", "me three", +1, etc. type of posts. To that end perhaps some compromise could be reached, in the form of a delay between, say 60 and 180 seconds? Even 60 secs will discourage spammers interested in "cut-n-paste post, cut-n-paste post" etc.

Perhaps 60 seconds would be my suggestion for a start.

I tried to post last night but I daresay you were in the throes of fixing it...as I received "access denied" to everything after I logged in!

Thanks again,

Pitrack_1

I agree that a small time frame would be beneficial like 60 seconds. Don't know what can actually be done with the software though.

In the last 6 months or so I think I've seen around 4-5 spam topics started (No replies to them). All just links to other websites claiming to be selling parts or whatever.

I'm really no good with computers and have had my paypal account hacked previously so I am very wary of spam/virus posts etc etc.
