Hi all,

again sorry if this is a bit of a newbie query- but getting inquisitive and pulling the starter off my 3hp B&S on my utility mower one day, I observed the governor flywheel. However, I found one fin missing and another chipped, see photo:

So I was wondering a couple of things:
  • does this substantively contributes to mower vibration (which is quite strong) whilst running?
  • is it necessary to replace the flywheel, and if so where can I get one? Spare off an old motor likely, how do I know its correct for the motor?
  • I guess it also influences the governor, but one fin missing is probably not too bad?

Thanks,

Pitrack.

Welcome, the fins chipped, missing will not cause the vibration. I'd look at the blades/ blade carrier. It is not neccessary to replace the flywheel. It shouldn't affect cooling at all nor the governor. Not an ideal situation but nothing to worry about.

Also check for a bent crankshaft and blade balance.

As the missing and chip fins probably was done previously not using the starter clutch tool but the old hammer trick.
