Hi 4567, welcome to Outdoorking.

I'm not clear on what you mean by "the blade". Are you talking about the reel, or the bedknife? It is a very bad idea to remove the bedknife (that is, the fixed blade) from the cast iron soleplate to which it is attached. You need a press and special tools to put it back on properly, and meanwhile there is a risk you will damage the soleplate, which is quite expensive to replace.

Please explain what you are trying to do.

Hi Grumpy & 4567,

I'm pretty sure you're referring to the Bed Knife blade and as Grumpy's said it's best to let an engineer do that part of the job when renewing it. One is not going to save a penny by removing it yourself and if it is still serviceable then it will be reground being attached to the sole plate.

Cheers,
BB

yes the bed knife the previous owner seemed to adjust the reel on one side its pretty buggered .the blade screwdriver I refer to must be a snug fit as I restore vintage bikes I know you have to get the right size screwdriver as you will bugger the head specially on brit machines .i am new to working on lawn mowers and i probably should get a manual for correct terminology cheers

Hi 4567,

I'm not sure we are both on the same page. You can not adjust the bed knife at all, only the height of the reel can be raised or lowered towards the bed knife. If you are attempting to loosen the reel adjusting screw then you must first loosen the bearing carrier nut on the outside of the mowers side plate and then loosen the lock nut on the set screw, only then will the reel move up or down.

Hope this is making sense to you.

Cheers,
BB

Hi 4567,

That's always the best way for us to approach issues as ones perception can be different to another's
