Hey All,

I couldn't go past this one...a 20" Supercut in really nice original condition.
She still runs beautifully too, cut the font and back lawns yesterday with no problems.
Love the Supercut.

Hi CJ and Craig

Honestly I haven't seen two "Supercuts" alike, I guess that's always going to be the case when there were over 30 variants of this machine made.

Cheers,
BB

Hey CyberJack, thanks for the reply......I don't usually get too much response regarding Supercuts. Catcher is pretty sweet

Hi Craig,

I've actually got 2 of them, but mine are actually identical machines but I've never seen any others that are identical, (thought I'd clear that up from my previous post) one is an original and the other is a scrapper for parts only. My intention is to do a full restoration back to original on my main 18 inch unit and then use it a few times a year just to preserve a piece of Australia's Mowing heritage.

I to have a soft spot for the Supercuts.

There is another thread on this forum that shows that machine in full.

Cheers,
BB

Hey BB,

I had a look at the pics of your Supercut.....very nice! I think it's testimony to Scott Bonnar that so many of these machines are still around 50-60 years on in absolute working condition with no major mods. I know the Villiers engine is not popular, but I think they're still up to the task (in particular with a carby repair kit from Villiers Parts). To me that low-revving, un-silenced thumping is part of the Supercut experience.....heheh

Look forward to your resto updates,

Craig

Hello Craig and Mod BB,

It is not common to find a Supercut in this original condition.
There appears to be two crank points (like a Dennis).
The catcher is very good - and a classic SB shape.

I guess this will have a 'sensitive' restoration?

Hi CJ and Craig

Have to say that two crank points is something different on a SB

Cheers,
BB

Hey CJ and BB,

I think the Supercut is not as untouched as I first thought,, the engine has been shifted about 50mm to the crankcase side to fit a non standard (I'm guessing) pulley set-up, The belt and pulley sizes seem correct though as I've got another one and a half 20" machines to compare her to. Anyway, I've got enough bits and peices to get everything back to original specs.....I think....heheh

Can you please explain the two crank points a little more to me as I'm not quite sure what you mean?

Thanks for your help,

Craig

Hello Craig and Mod BB,

The second crank point was a reference to the elongated pulley on the crankshaft.
Clearly, now, I take it that this is not meant for the crank handle at all.
It's just a curious casting, but you are saying it may be non-standard...

Here is another member's machine (shedpest).
I guess this is what the arrangement should look like(?).

All very curious.

Hey CJ,

No, you are correct, the elongated pulley is most definitely a second crank point....I had a close inspection after your post. Probably not a standard thing (where's DeeJay when you need him....heheh) but I think I'll keep it set up that way. The engine being off-set is due to the pulley on the driveshaft being installed around the opposite way to the ones on my other machine and also Shedpest's. Not sure why this has occurred but it's a pretty simple fix-up to turn it around and thus allow the engine mounting plate to go back into it's original holes and set the engine properly square again.

Cheers,

Craig

Hi Mark and CJ,

I think you'll find that this machine has been fitted with an anti-clockwise rotating engine just like the electrics are, while most Villiers petrol driven Supercuts were chain driven and used a clockwise rotating engine which had the drive gear on the shaft right next to the clutch fork assembly.

Cheers,
BB

Hey BB,

No, I don't think that is correct. The Villiers (along with the factory reduction box) is as clockwise as Big Ben me thinks. Over the last 5 years I've acquired three 20" model Supercuts, all belt driven and set up exactly like the beautiful example posted by Shedpest. I've also got a smaller chain-driven (Supercut) machine with the engine the other way around, ......I'm guessing belt-drives were introduced after chain drives, which was probably to the benefit of many peoples fingers.

Craig
