Take the guts out of the round starter and transfer them to the Corvette Cowl. you'll now have the original cowl and starter and you'll be able to use the fuel tank also.

Strip the starter out of the one that works and use that to repair the one that came off the mower....starter and fuel tank issue fixed!

pretty sure bigted meant to take the starter mechanism out of the white round one a put it all in the black utilty cowelling . lot of the time if theres no stater in them the moulding is still there all you need to do is carefuly cut out the hole for pullcord.
unless thats not what you meant ? confused

short of one of us coming too do it for you , the title of the post is a good one wink . take off the black one ...... turn it over .... look at the underside of it ..... see if with some SMALL modification will the internals from the vc starter fit into the black utilty cowelling banghead

Thanks vccomm, thats exactly what i meant. The post to hold the pulley should be there. Everything else should drop straight in and like you said, drill the hole for the rope to go through and if you want to get professional, put an eyelet in too so it doesnt chew out the housing everytime you pull the cord.
If that doesnt work, you can still use the fuel tank and the lower tank bracket and make up a top tank bracket that picks up from the back 2 starter bolts and goes around the filler neck to hold the tank in place.
Here, like this:

1st one is i think almost the same as yours there , its a silverstreak in a past life !
2nd one is a sports type will fit straight on if the starter cup is the same and ..... i think they are
ooooh yeh , the 4th screw is hiding under the start handle , under that leaf i forgot to move wink

Ok have looked into my options. I dont have another cowl. Well I do but its on my twin so.. Am going to source one on my next tip trip. I couldnt work out how to pull apart my zip starter. As I have a powerful motor with new blades on it I recon it will deal with my 2 foot high lawns. cheapskates like me that would prefer to spend 100 to get their lawn done every year not like the normal people who i charge 30 every 6 months and the job is heaps easyer. thanks for the help vccomm bigted deisleboy and all you others
