There was a few variations of the colours for these models, but if you stick with what vccomm has suggested you should be good and close to the original colour. Generally with any top coat (on metal) primer should be used. With hammertone paint you can paint without primer,(I usually don't myself)as if you use primer you really should scuff it up with 400 grit wet and dry (or higher) before painting. So I guess that's up to you, hammertone paint will stick to metal without primer, but should really use it.Just depends on weather you want to or not.
Here for a good time, not a long time.

Thanks for the tip, will get some tomorrow. i have a mate comming over tomorrow and i have known this fella for 10 plus years. i mentioned to him about a month ago about my mower affliction and he informed me that he was a fully qualified small motor mechanic. gave him a fried chainsaw i have had for years, left half the parts at home. he had it going in 12 hours so i gave him the rest of the parts. He is coming over tommorrow to check out my crew, with toolbag. And he is a nice fella

Good to see your starting to get into the restoring as well, but it would be better if you started your own thread on your restore. As this one is titled Victa 18 resto and your mower is not that.It also makes it easier if some one in the future is trying to locate your mower.
Here for a good time, not a long time.

no wire wheels nooooooo , just clean it up first you will be surprised how good it works , other members have ways of doing it too , mine is just a good degrease then alloy wheel cleaner . leaves it nice and clean orig' looking . sandblasting is one way , paint stripper is another just messier . read the threads on colours/my new victa 18s up there in popular topics a great read and all the info you will ever need , by some of the best restorers on here . take your time , take it easy and do it right we are here to help
