In the last 2 weeks I have rebuilt the clutch pack on a green field mower among other things the manual I copied showed some thing but lacked most information an thanks to grumpy an friends here I have learnt a lot but this [Censored] thing locked in drive an also reverse I have pulled it a part again to see what went wrong but cant find anything that causes it . It mite be the adjustment or on the top idler pulley.my question how do you tension the idler pulley on the drive belts

Hi Jamez, welcome to Outdoorking.

We need more information on what you mean by "locked up". If it locks up in either forward or reverse, but not both simultaneously, and if it is capable of being unlocked, the problem may be in the clutch linkage. On the other hand if both forward and reverse are permanently locked up, it sounds like assembly error in the center of the clutch axle. We need to understand the malfunction before we can suggest possible causes.

I don't own the mower in question I was asked to repair it I wasn't told until latter it wont reverse I found the the cork was woren out so I placed with new cork an new drive belt an deck belts supplied, also replaced the drive bearings an the two in the main pulleys an the selector as well .when we drove it there was it locked up in forward drive as well in reverse from drive belt . Iam thinking the belt tension is too loose .this green field mower 32 is a fixed axel not sure when it was made .

I don't have a specific parts list for your model, but here is one that might be the same (Evo 14-32):

The shim stacks are critically important: you must use the same thickness of shims on both clutches, and the thickness must be exactly right so that the clutches have only very, very slight drag when assembled on the bench with the nuts tightened. Too much drag and the clutches will not free. Too little and the clutches will slip when you've pressed the pedal all the way.

Its the same in the manual evolution fast cut 32 11.5 to 13.5 which I have on the drive side (chain) its got one washer but on the other side there 3 washers all same width 1mm >the numbers are wrong but are basically the same heres the trouble the spring goes against a washer but on the other side which is the clutch it sits on the ally .I know theres suppose to be shims which is 0.05 of a mm but on this drive there is 3 1mm washers

Jamez, it isn't likely to work until it's assembled exactly as shown in the parts list I posted, with identical parts on both sides. Even when you do that, it won't work until you experiment with shim stacks to get the required clearance.

I suggest you take the complete clutch axle to a competent Greenfield repair shop and get it assembled properly with the correct parts.

I think you are on the right track. There is no reason to think it was correctly assembled when it came to you, and if all components were not symmetrical across the centerline of that axle, it was not correctly assembled. Getting it fixed, and being shown how to do future adjustments to shim packs to compensate for wear, should put the difficulties behind you.

I'll close this thread.
